Hopefully this may help someone else.
I'd been having problems with my 2013 Multispace 1.6 Hdi going into limp mode and throwing an orange EML triangle.
The only code found by my cheap Streetwise 2 scanner was P0500, pointing to the speed sensor, so I ordered one.. As it happened this turned out to be the wrong one so I returned it. In the meantime, I'd noticed that the limp mode and EML was happening every time the car got up to, or somewhere near the normal engine operating temperature - just under 90c in my car's case. So thinking the problem may lie elsewhere, I took the car to a friend who had a better scanner (garage type ?) and he found two codes P0494 + P495 > 'Radiator fan speed'. On further investigation I noticed that the fan wasn't coming on at all so decided to have a look..
To get anywhere near the fan assembly it's necessary to loosen the front bumper and grill (a major task) and either remove it all together or ease it forward leaving one side still attached, which is what I did. (Wheels and wheel arch liners need to come off to get at the bumper fixings)
Once I had access, I unplugged the fan (2 wire plug) and connected a temporary live and neutral - it was working fine.. So... I decided to change the fan relay/resistor as I'd read that these can be problematic and this is what switches the fan on and off - Two electrical plugs and one fixing screw, easy to remove and refit.
Rang Citroen for a price - £85 ! Long story short, I ordered one from eBay @ £12.95, fitted it and all is back to normal.. Not sure how long it will last but at that price worth giving it a shot - at least I now know the problem is and how to solve it.. It takes about 2 minutes to fit and 2 hours to get at it !!
Added bonus - The car just passed it's MOT which it wouldn't have with the EML showing.. Result !
