What do folks normally do with scrap car parts? I took the old tailpipe off my M49 to the local recycling centre today, and was told that they don't normally take car parts, except for brakes and tyres (and oil), although they said I could put it into the scrap metal skip this time, but only because I didn't have any other parts I was trying to dispose of. Is this standard for council sites? Seems a bit unhelpful to me. I guess in future I'll have to find a scrap metal merchant?

This is from my local council website.
Cars can be surrendered using our vehicle surrender scheme Car parts (metal/plastic/glass) can be taken to one of our household waste recycling centres.

I always put my old metal parts in the scrap metal skip at the recycling place, never had a problem. It all gets melted down so should be no big deal. Tyres are another matter.

My local council tip ( recycling centre ) won't take tyres full stop !
No issues with exhausts though as I took a back box and centre pipe from my Berlingo to the tip a ciuple of days back.
Where I live there are a few " scrappies " and they go around the streets collecting waste metal, most folks just leave their scrap outside the house and the pixies take it all away. Luckily our " scrappies " are bona fide businesses and not the other less desirable types.
Finding a local scrap merchant - they'll likely take the metal for free but getting money is another matter unless you have a few hundred Kgs to weigh in.

Edit Reason: doormat not doorstep
)
It seems local councils vary in their approach - as I headed toward the scrap metals skip with my old exhaust I was stopped by a member of staff and asked, "do you have any more car parts or is it just that one?" and was then told that if I had any more then they wouldn't accept them. Maybe they'd rather people flytipped them....
Anyway, by a weird coincidence, a couple of hours after posting this thread I noticed a leaflet on my doormat from a local private recycling firm, which said "wanted - scrap metal, free collection, nothing too big or too small", so that's an easy solve.

Scrap metal is a funny old game, a few years back the prices were low and it cost about £40 for the boys old Polo to be collected .... fast forward a few years and I weighed in a family car for nearly £200 ..... fast forward again and all I got offered for a peugeot 306 ( me taking it there ) was a measly £16.50 !
Luckily the car was decent with 5 months mot and the secretary at the scrappies needed a new car quick so she offered me £50 which I accepted.

I'm lucky that we have a skip at work that I can use, any metal gets left at the side and usually 'disappears' after a few days, if not it goes in the skip. Some of the 'scrap collectors' will only take non-ferrous, others aren't so picky. I've been sorting my Mum's garage out recently and got a load of scrap, I know a scrap man so I'm give him a call. Our local tip (sorry, 'recycling centre') has a permit system for vans and pick ups, it used to last 2 years but since the pandemic it now lasts 2 weeks... the daft thing is we can drop the seats on the O/Hs estate car and probably get more in it than my van.
When I scrapped my Combo about a year ago I used 'scrap my car' online, got £149 collected.

I just leave any scrap metal out the front in sight of the street and it vanishes in a few minutes

Is it picked up by the needy or the garbage men?
