Eco mode, not restarting
#1
Morning - I’m badly in need of some advice

My Berlingo is a 2013 Multispace, diesel, automatic gear box

I was travelling down the motorway for about an hour at 70mph, Eco mode was on as it normally is and when I came down the slip road to a roundabout I stopped, the engine went off and wouldn’t start again. It was pretty stressful as I’d basically blocked one of the two lanes at peak time.

Anyway I tried to investigate, unsuccessfully, and was about to phone for help when I thought I might as well give it one last try…and it started. I drove about 1/2 mile down the road and the battery light came on with a click. I turned off Eco mode as I was going along so at least I would idle at junctions until I got home

I have since started the car and moved it on the drive, but I’m too worried to go out in it again until I discover what is wrong.

I don’t know if it’s relevant, but I had an idea it might be to do with some overheating somewhere - there’s plenty of coolant and the engine temperature wasn’t up high, on the dial at least, and it seems to fit with the engine starting again after five minutes.

Has anyone else had this issue or knows what might be causing it?

Thanks

Marco

I had a problem with the ECO mode not working this year. Turned out I needed a new battery on my 2014 diesel auto. Get a good new battery with adequate capacity and it should resolve itself.

As above, it may well be your battery but might also be the alternator not charging enough.
I'm not 100% sure about the B9 but on the M59, ECO mode is generally due to a low voltage, or can be when you've had the radio for a while without the engine running. & it's automatically turned off after 20 mins or so.
Before getting a new battery, it's worth checking the voltage when the engine is running & when it's not. You can buy various devices that plug into the 12v socket, but best is a multi meter.

I think there are two Eco modes. One is to save fuel where the engine stops at junctions and restarts when you depress the accelerator and the other is where the radio (or whatever) turns off to preserve the battery - when parked up generally. I’m talking about the former

I have a multi-meter but am not sure how I should set it

You need to measure DC volts, there should be some videos online about how to use a multimeter on a car battery. I think there's a positive terminal for jump starting on the B9, but am not sure.

Volts DC, range to include 12-20 volts. Check battery voltage at rest - should be around 12.6 volts. Start the engine & run at fast tickover - should settle at 13.7 to 14.7 volts if alternator is operating OK.

(18-10-2021, 10:17 AM)So is the battery Showing signs of being flat? Is it turning over ok but just won’t start. I would see if there are any fault codes. Wrote:  Morning - I’m badly in need of some advice

Thanks!

I’ll do that, first light

The Stop/Start stopped and wouldn’t start again. A turn of the key didn’t do anything at all like the whole thing was totally dead. A few minutes later I turned the key again and it started up as usual. Then 1/2 a mile down the road the battery light came on with a click and stayed on. I kept going, but turned off the Stop/Start so that the engine would keep idling when I had to stop at junctions. The next morning it started fine again

Clearly something’s up and waiting to happen again under the right circumstances

I’m not sure where or how I’d see any fault codes

Thanks

I would say it’s not a battery problem if when you went back and it started and turned over at a good rate ( not struggling). Obviously worth doing the checks suggested by others. Not familiar with stop start if that is where the fault lies. The only way I know to gain some idea of the problem is whether you can pick up a fault code with a obd reader. Plenty of information out there to do it yourself or take it to a garage and have them put it on one.
