Dropped a valve ?
#11
Having had a further look some sources list the 1.5 hdi engine as 8 valve & some list it as a 16 valve, maybe there are two versions?

It's all a bit confusing!

I think the 2 1.5 Engines may be the DV5RC & the DV6FC
The DV5RC has twin camshafts, while the DV6FC has a single camshaft
https://site.groupe-psa.com/powertrain/e...rs-diesel/

FWIW / IMHO etc, the cam chain should have lasted longer. I'd be onto the ombudsman, can't hurt.

It's all very confusing . . .  Huh

The DV5RC engine is a twin cam 16 valve 130hp engine.

The 1.5 (1498cc) 75hp engine depending on where you look is listed as being 16v & 8v

It's listed as being 16v here . . .  https://avtotachki.com/en/citroen-berlin...l-s-6-mkp/

But listed as 8v here . . .  https://www.ultimatespecs.com/car-specs/...Di-75.html

Are we sure this is the 1.5 diesel?

I thought they sold a few of the early Berlingo and Rifter with the 1.6 due to a delay in the availability of the 1.5?

Likewise there are a few early diesel ones that have a 5 speed gearbox; the same is true for some of the early 1.2 petrol puretech that had 5 speed gearboxes where now they are all 6 speed.

It’s definitely a 1.5, I started a case with the ombudsman and they were ready to start talking to Citroen when they called me and asked whether I used the van for business.
Answer was yes (of course) , they then said that due to business use they couldn’t help me, they suggested I go to citizens advice to take matters further…… my guess is that Citroen knew this already.
Further update, new engine has developed a massive oil leak and a emissions adblue warning light came on.
Took it to the main dealer who looked at it while I waited and found the warning light was due to a faulty injector?. The oil loss was all over the engine so much they couldn’t see from where it was coming from.
They have given me a l2 h2 Relay to use until they can get me a Berlingo to use while repairs are done, unsuitable but wheels after all.
I’m exaperated to say the least ……

I was googling 1.5 Hdi engine problems and found this Peugeot Forum thread:

https://www.peugeotforums.com/threads/di...ms.334904/

It's a thread about the dpf but just over halfway down the first page there's a post by a user called Mario Melo who says: "I bought 5 Peugeot 308 with the 1.5 Blue Hdi engine. All 5 got problems arround 60000 km. 3 broke the engine. The problem is the chain tensioner that broke. The Peugeot didn't accept that is a design problem. So decide for your self."

Is this the same issue?

Obviously not a serviceable part until it is worn and noisy,I don’t recall hearing any unusual noise but it broke and self destructed the top end , including at least one valve rocker and a couple of valves.

A bit further down that pug forum page the same user (Mario Melo) says, "To add, the engine have a belt drive to intermidle poly and the cams are gear by an internal chain. The problem is the chain hydraulic tensor." A bit technical for me, but does that fit with what chrisl has said earlier in this thread?

Just read the last couple of posts and it certainly substantiates what I have suffered despite the engine being over maintained.
Believe it or not I still do not have my van back and am using the dealers loan Berlingo.
It’s been there since Oct 5th !
As long as I have their van I’m happy and have put 50k on their loan vans so far.

I’m guessing that making the extra oil changes helped my engine to get to 111k before self destructing.
My loan Berlingo has now done 35k (56000km) - I’m wondering what they would say if their van suffers the same problem at 60000km ?
