Engine warning light
#1
I have a 2013 multispace, while on a trip to Manchester the engine warning light came on. I found a local garage and he connected his machine and found it to be something to do with the turbo.
He said i could drive home with it and get it looked at with my local mechanic. He said it may go into limp home mode so i took the chance, he cleared the fault and i drove home no problem.

It stay cleared for about two weeks but then came back on, i made an appointment with my mechanic for two days later. When i went out to start the car the fault had cleared by itself??

I went to the the mechanic anyway and he connected his machine to the car and he also said it was the turbo, something to do the the exhaust side of the turbo.
He said that some model have adjusting fan blades on the exhaust turbo and that they could become stuck sometimes on higher milage cars and that the sensor for the blades could be faulty. He would look into it and get back to me.

I have never heard of adjustable exhaust fan blades though it does sound feasible.

Any comments on this please as i am always eager to learn .

Yes, it is a VNT turbo as opposed to a fixed geometry turbo (say 1.6HDi 92bhp). Basically it is different way of adjusting the amount of air going through the exhaust turbine side. Good pictures of how it operates online, for example here: https://youtu.be/hdjsNPeCLQs

It would be interesting to know what the error code was.
As Saskak says, you probably have a VNT turbo. The turbo vanes are prone to getting clogged and jammed and also damaged as the original vanes are made from very thin steel. The options are a turbo rebuild with a new VNT nozzle ring, or a nozzle ring & turbo core, or a replacement turbo. Which route you take depends on the current wear & mileage of your turbo.

Thanks for the replies.
There is 81K on the clock. Is there a way to check the sensor?

I think you need the error code, it may be that the boost detected is lower than expected. There's a boost detector / sensor in the throttle / doseur assembly.
To get the error code, you need an OBD reader and an app like Torque on your phone. There are also readers that will give the code via an inbuilt LCD display but they are more expensive and limited in what you can do with them.
I've just re-read my post above and wanted to clarify my use of the word 'vane' I'm thinking of the nozzle ring vanes rather than the compressor vanes in the turbo. If you search via Google for things like stuck / jammed VNT, you'll get the idea.

I have used the car after the faults were cleared by my mechanic and it all seems ok to me power wise.
I will do the search as you suggested just to read up on it.
I had an OBD meter about 20 years ago but it's long gone and i probably no good now for todays cars.
Not really interested in car ailments they are a PITA lol. Now if it was motorcycles thats different.
