Front External Door Handles - replacement
#1
Hi.

I have a 2003 Berlingo Multispace and basically both front door handles (external) seam to have lost their springs (well, probebly more broken) as the handles don't spring back so often when you get in, you need to make such the handle is pushed in before the door will shut. Minor annoyance but still..

Looking online, it seams it's best to just replace the whole handle.. i Think i've found a set for a good price but the problem is removing the old ones.. it appears to be connected by two points.. the bottom is a nut and bolt so should be able to take it off, but the top one appears to be a rivet or something which is an odd choice for such a thing.

best i can find outline says i'll need to drill that out which is very annoying.. but then leaves the problem of replacement (which i guess.. i'll try a nut and bolt that seams to fit). is there any other way then drilling it out for removing that top connection?

I am also looking at replacing the door handle from one side. The only way I could find and hence I have not done it yet is to drill the rivet. It does not seem that there is any other option. SUbsequently is either a nut/bolt or another rivet.
Let us know if you find some other way.

didn't see it but need a better look.. Did read on here i think that it was easier and not much difference in price to replace the whole handle though.. looking at what the handles look like, i can't see how to replace the spring without the problem of taking off the handle which is kinda the problem ^_^
thanks though

yeah.. I did see that one.. seams like it does need the top drilled out.. atleast both bottoms are nut and bolt though.. I should have a spare pair of nuts and bolts to replace the top rivet.. weird to have something that would be needed to be replaced and lock it in like that but oh well.

Thanks

My first M59 had a broken spring, but I decided it was too expensive to bother when adding postage costs from abroad. That was before Brexit, so no idea if / how that affects things.

I'm in the broken door handle spring club too.
Fortunately having an old Land Rover,
the pop rivets & tools are no biggy.

yeah... I know it's.. well.. being about a 2003 model, some years old, but really, they should be easier to deal with as spring damage isn't very uncommon in things.. interesting the bottom two rivets are in fact nuts and bolts on mine..

what kinda tools do you use to deal with the rivets? other then just trying to drill them out

I use a drill too, but they do have an annoying habit of spinning. Pop rivet tools tend to be quite cheap.
