Looks a little better if the speedometer is in km/h and not in MPH, then the speedometer reaches 190 km/h and you see differences between it and the RPM clock.
But still it is uncomfortable...

I hardly look at rev counters - I just listen to engine note. The rev counter on my M49 stopped working years ago. A mobile electrics guy looked at it but the cost of fixing was too much and I just got used to not having one that worked. I sometimes look at the counter on my K9, but only going up hills to check revs aren't going below where the turbo kicks in at about 1,750 rpm (without the turbo, power kinda vanishes).

Can't you make a card insert for your wife to use to cover up the rev counter?
