Replacement door mirror questions
#1
2016 1.6 Blue Hdi 100

Filling up at Asda Bristol yesterday, I heard a loud bang and some illegitimate idiot in a red Qashqai sped off after racing through the pumps at high speed.
When I came back around the drivers side, I discovered what the bang was. My door mirror had exploded all over the forecourt.

SO. I have to order a replacement electric drivers door mirror.

Should I go for PSA, or are any of the aftermarket ones acceptable?

I don't think I had a heated mirror, but how do I make sure?

As always, thanks for any help.

Edit. This one claims to be OEM quality

I assume that heated has the two additional connectors on the glass, which don't appear on the fragments of mine.

Ask the petrol station if they caught it on their CCTV - if so, report it to the police as a 'failure to stop' after a collision!
A heated mirror may have a stuck on 'mesh' of heating elements in the back (which would connect to the 2 contacts mentioned.
The supply wires should also be obvious within the mirror shell.
I've used aftermarket mirrors a couple of times - wife's Hyundai, heated, £80, or £16 on Ebay = looked good and works great.

A few years ago some toe-rag decided to break the nearside mirror of the wife's dog van one night when it was parked on the drive up against the fence. Non-electrical folding or heated but did have electrical adjustment from inside. It cost us £150 for a replacement from PSA. Dead easy to change though. Our plod friend reckons they do that when they have to give the lease vehicle back with a broken mirror.

If you press the heating button, the other mirror should be heating if you have it as an option. That is how you could be sure if you have it.

I had a similar experience with a broken side view mirror in my M59, but fortunately the glass was intact and only the plastic surround was smashed. I bought a straight OEM replacement from eurocarparts. All was good, but when driving, it was shaking slightly and was making me dizzy by looking in the side view mirror. I took it all apart and the "OEM" wing mirror was made from hard plastic and my original one had a metal backbone. I swapped all the inside parts from my original one into the OEM and it was not shaking any more.

If I were you I would buy a used one on ebay, rather than OEM. You can spray paint it to match the colour.

Cheers for the replies.
The main body is smashed, but the painted trim is fine. It was hit forward, so the body took the brunt of the impact.
I gave my details at the time in the hope they would have cameras on the pumps, but no contact from them yet.
I did try calling them at Asda Bristol today and they've shut down their only phone lines, while also having no email contact, so I suspect that may be a non starter.
Given that the police don't usually turn up for local retail crimes, I'm not hopeful that they will expend much effort on a broken wing mirror.
Thanks for all the replies anyway.

Does the heated mirror only operate when the rear screen defroster is switched on ?
So where does this bit go then ?

On my M59 there is only one button for this and it operates both the mirrors and the rear screen defroster. I suspect it is the same for the B9.

Update time.
Bought a used door mirror in good condition and it has now arrived.
Fitting the replacement has been in progress.

A few points to note.
There are three screws holding the mirror in place, but the car is of French design, so removing the interior trim for the mirror, gets you access to 1 screw.
The other two screws are visible, but are (only just) inaccessible by 1/2" of door trim.
Because of that 1/2" obstruction, the whole door panel must be removed, which is..... interesting.

NOTE...Buy more plastic clips before removing door panel.
They will break.
And fall inside the door.
Where they will rattle.

When replacing the mirror, if the new one has an alloy structure, but the old one is plastic, DO NOT try and use the same screws.
They will start easily and then jam solid.
The head will then break off and much swearing and blood letting will ensue.
Ask me how I know.

As a consequence, I now know how to strip the mirror apart and swap bits over, though between new and old they are not entirely the same.
Anyway, I now have to find out how to strip out a seized screw and rethread it to fit a new one.
Can alloy be re-threaded?
Anyone know the thread size of the newer alloy parts, so I can avoid a repeat performance?

You can tap a new thread in aluminium quite easily, what size is it to start with ?
So where does this bit go then ?

Over the past couple of years I've had to fix both my 2016 B9 XTR door mirrors for similar reasons to you guys, it seemed to me that there are some cost savings to be made depending upon exactly what parts have broken, for example. unless the parking and swivelling motor/mechanisms are broken/has failed you can swap them from existing to a new shell which are available as both Citroen and pattern parts. similarly the glass, heated or not, is available separately.
Couple of other points on this: 1) my car originally had shiny black mirror shells, these are not so easy to source, it has got dark grey matt finish ones now, (obviously you have to do this in pairs). 2) be aware that the shape of the shell and the glass changed over the years, probably at the 2014 facelift.
