Belt smoking
#1
I thought smoking in cars was banned but apparently not. Just changed the alternator and the belt did'nt want
to go on. When I finally got it on and released the tensioner I thought it was a bit tight (like its owner)
Belt began to smoke after about 30 secs. Belt over hanging on the tensioner, tipping the belt to rub on the returning belt
run. Moved it back over but the same thing happened again. Am I going mad, the belt can only go on one way surely!

Thing is the car has been standing a few months and belt left slack, could it have shrunk and maybe being coldish didn't help!

It's an m59 dw8 (wjy) 1.9 if that helps

Or possibly the belt one groove out of alignment - my old ZX from years back had an alternator that had one more groove than the other pulleys  Undecided

Well it went on ok bolts tightened nice and tight, wil have a closer look tomorrow if it isn't raining
look for a miss alighnment or a wobble. Suppose it's likely something to do with the new one I've
put on as it wasn't slipping off before. Somethings not right, belt went on easy when I changed
the pas last year sometime. Had to push the tensioner all the way back this time from underneath,
with the pas change I justpushed the 15mm spanner on the tensioner from above and fed
the belt on the pump.

Think the tensioner pulley is borked. Put a new auxhiliary belt on (a 6pk 1437)
which was the same length as the old on and the same thing happened, it began
to slip off. Could see the t/pulley has lost its spring pressure and moves back
too easily when belt is on.

I believe this belt is too small, it was an absolute pig to get on. I think i need
a 6pk 1447 I will speak to the local motor factor tomorrow

Guy at lmf was certain he supplied the correct belt, said he'd never
heard of a 1447 for my model.
I know it's had a different sort of alternatorfitted at one time think it
was off an 02 1.4 pug 302 or summat but has been working fine unti
recently.

It may just be the angle of the photo taken but it looks to me as if the belt is running too close to the alternator body. Is the alternator the correct one and is it mounted on the mounting bracket correctly?

It looks to me as if it needs to move to the right a little.
