A HOT heater & Faster Warm-up 1.6HDi
#1
Like several on here, last winter I asked about what felt like a prolonged warm up cycle: about 20 mins or 10+ miles and, on mime, the temperature only reaching approx 70-degrees when the manual says 83-degrees.

I use mine early morning to take the dogs out and being in a rural location it can be bitter during the winter. Typically 5 miles each way and the heater never generated anything resembling 'normal' saloon car heat (nor did it do so on longer journeys).

I had the temperature gauge tested (turned out to be spot on) and checked the cooling system as far as I could without dismantling, including a thorough flush.

I had previously thought about changing the thermostat but had some difficulty rationalising approx £50 for a new one - and left it till "one day" when I'd have time to strip the existing one and see if I could check it. Of course that day never came.

With the recent drop in temperatures, I decided to bite the bullet and get a new thermostat unit. On mine there are two types - so I took the vehicle to the local motor factors to ensure the correct one. It was a rather lumpy £58. And turned out to be the wrong one! Only discovered once the current one was removed of course. The correct one - a slightly better £40 - looks the same from the front of the engine bay ... it is the rear (and possibly underneath) which is different. Perhaps one of the experts on here can describe the differences more accurately to help people avoid the issue.

Once installed, went out for a run expecting a revelation...and was very disappointed to see the temperature gauge firmly parked at 70-degrees. I returned home a bit hacked off.

Two journeys after - the gauge climbed to 83-degrees. No idea what the prior issue was...

What a transformation:

1) Having been parked outside overnight, even with -1 degree we recently had the gauge starts climbing after the first couple of miles and whilst not fully up to 83 in 5 miles its not far off.

2) Once up to temperature the heater is HOT! Now, I have to turn the thing down whereas all last winter it barely took the chill off the interior.

The best £40 I've spent on the vehicle.

Hope this helps a couple of others who were having a similar issue.

Thank you for the post and the effort.

Would you be able to confirm with the old thermostat at what temperature it opens? A pot of water on a hob and a thermometer should work, unless of course it is completely stuck on open and it never closes.

There was probably air in the system when you first fitted your new stat and it has now circulated back to the header tank, nice having heat isn't it ?
So where does this bit go then ?

Yes, the heat is great. I posted the outcome since (previously) there were several owners unhappy with warm-up/degree of heat delivered.

Unfortunately I cant advise re the prior thermostat, it went in the bin.

And, yes, quite possibly some air in the system giving a misleading early reading.

All good now!
