Lidl Battery Charger
#11
I bought one of the Aldi ones but it didn't work and I took it back, I haven't bothered with another one as it was for the Cortina battery and I've sold it now.

One the subject of batteries, a couple of years ago the O/Hs car developed a strange fault in the middle of summer. It would start fine in the morning and at work to come home. She would then go out in the evening on a short journey to the allotment, it would start fine. When it had been standing for maybe an hour at the allotment the battery would be flat. Happened a couple of times, I took it to independent spares shop that I use and they tested the battery and it was kaput, the guy said that hot weather can kill a failing battery as well as cold.

ive had the lidle one for a couple of years, ive found it refuses to play on a flat battery, stick it on a battery thats below 10 volts and it wont even try, have to stick an old charger on for half an hour or so to kick the battery upto arround 12 volts then leave the lidle one on overnight. done this on several ride on mower batteries,

I use mine to charge the battery every month. It's simple to do & I've never had battery problems.

Seems to be a supply problem at Lidl, along with many other places of course. I wanted to get the jump starter pack to use as a mini leisure battery, I visited 2 branches in Lincoln on Thursday, both had hundreds of cordless tool battery chargers & one branch had a few hundred oil pumps, there were a few 12v chargers in the Dixon St branch in case anyone is interested. Unfortunately, neither had the jump starter and I see it's now been removed from the Lidl web site.

So, I've decided it might be a good idea to get myself a charger.  My M49's battery was totally dead this afternoon, so for the first time I got out the multimeter that I bought many months ago, and tested both my M49 and K9.  The M49's charge was 11.58, the K9 was 12.32.  Seeing as the M49's battery is 6 years old I'll just buy a new one, but the K9's is only 3.5 years old, and I'm thinking a charger might help it last a bit longer (especially as it's not possible to drive without the lights on).  I've read through this thread (and the one about Aldi's charger, here: https://www.berlingoforum.com/thread-207...ery+charge ), but I'm still feeling a bit ignorant about the different variations of charger and how to use them.  Anyone got any basic advice?

So I decided to spend a few hours doing online research, and have just ordered a new battery and charger from Tayna. The charger is an all-singing-and-dancing NOCO GENIUS5UK.  Not the cheapest at just under £80 including delivery, but it seems to be in the top tier of chargers, so hopefully I won't have to buy another one.

As part of my research I found a site that's really helpful, which folks may or may not already know about:  https://carbatterygeek.co.uk/
It's got loads of detailed info on seemingly everything battery and charger related.

I used my new battery charger for the first time this afternoon, on the 6-year old battery I took out of the M49.  It's charge before recharging was 11.58, the same as a week ago, so it hadn't lost any more charge while sitting in the garage.  The charger took 5-6 hours to get it up to 12.83.  This seems healthy but I took the reading just after disconnecting the charger, so I'm guessing it might drop a bit - I'll re-test it tomorrow.  I didn't use the special 'battery repair'* function of the charger - this was just standard charging.

* 'Battery repair' function = "An advanced battery recovery mode for repairing and restoring old, idle, damaged, stratified or sulphated batteries".

I hadn't heard of that repair function before, I'd be interested to hear if it works or if it's just a gimmick to sell more.

I'll let folk know how it performs, when I use it.  I tested the battery again this morning and it had dropped to 12.53, which is really not bad for a 6-year old battery in quite cold weather (it's sub-zero outside, though the battery is in the garage). If it keeps dropping away I'll probably have a try of the repair function and see how well it works.

I'm hoping for it to keep dropping away, not to be an annoyance to yourself, but to find out how that function does.
