Magnetic band connector for tailgate awning

Hi all, apologies if this is addressed elsewhere but I couldn't find any opinions on magnetic band connectors for awnings.

I'm trying to create a basic drop down awning from the tailgate. I don't need something fully enclosed and waterproof, I'm just after some wind and light drizzle protection when cooking out of the back - I'd more accurately describe it as a set of bat wings that fold out when you open the tailgate and which can easily be tucked in and driven away without having to dismantle anything. I was considering the Outwell magnetic band connector and am interested to know if anyone has experience of this in terms of how strong the magnet is - again, it doesn't need to be bomb proof, just something that won't blow away in a bit of wind. Ideally I'd want to cut the band into three sections to run along the three sides of the tailgate, so if anyone knows if this is not possible/effective, please let me know.

All ideas/directions welcomed and appreciated.
