Input shaft play
#1
Hey!

I'm no mechanic but I managed to get the gearbox out of my Berlingo B9 (2015 with 200km on it). As I suspected the trust bearing was shot so I'm replacing the seals to the diff, input and output seals and clutch kit. Since I had a few occations where the clutch pedal "dissappeared" I'm also replacing the master cylinder (and while I was at it I got a new slave too).

I have a question tho. I dont know how this is supposed to be. This... lets call it "thingy" ( https://media.autodoc.de/360_photos/7022601/preview.jpg ). When I remove it, the input shaft feels very loose in every direction. When the thingy is bolted down, the shaft feels completely solid. I never had any problems with slipping gears or strange sounds (yeah, except when the bearing fell to pieces that is). Is this normal or should the gearbox be rebuilt? That would be too much for me to cope with....

Best regards,
Daniel / Sweden

Haven't taken one apart myself but the part shown is probably the sleeve that the clutch release mechanism runs on and may contain the gearbox seal/input shaft bearing. The input shaft is not only supported by that but also by the pi lot bearing in the centre of the flywheel so when the whole assembly is as 'one' the gearbox input shaft is very firmly supported.
If the input bearing is worn then it will 'roar' when the clutch is up in neutral and this noise will disappear when the clutch is depressed, as the input shaft will then stop rotating.

Thanks for your encouraging reply! When removed it looks like there is some kind of bearing underneath. It feels like the thingy is clamping it together or something.

The bearing you can see is a roller taper bearing, when you fit the "thingy" it will seat the bearing onto it's race and this will remove most of the play you can feel.

Remember to use a good quality sealant on your 'thingy' or you'll get drips. Blush
