Berlingo 1.9d loss of power and black smoke

From 1st to 3rd gear it drives reasonably OK, but once I build up speed and go over 3rd gear it struggles and chucks out black smoke

I checked the egr valve and filter and i see no obvious problems. Any ideas would be appreciated

Possibly a blockage or restriction in the engine air intake?

Black smoke suggests over fueling, maybe the inlet valves are not opening enough? Have you checked the valve clearances?
