Hi everyone I need your wealth of experience I have a 61 plate 1.6 and I’m struggling to find what’s wrong with it. It probably started about a year ago when very rarely I would start it and there would be no power at all even when you push the accelerator down turn off ignition and then fine for weeks unfortunately this now happens several times a day!!! The EML has come on with a few codes egr valve related also pre heater relay. I have had the egr changed but has made no difference at all the codes have been cleared but the fault remains the only thing that shows up on my cheap diagnostic is the pre heater relay but not showing a EML on the dash. Once it’s has started sometimes after several attempts it can run fine or more recently had started going into this total lack of power mode ( not a proper limb mode as there are no revs at all ) when the revs drop. Other things that might help with diagnosis is it always happens when I put it in reverse!! for some reason and the fuel consumption has reduced slightly and no real smoke to mention from the exhaust.
I would be very grateful of any suggestions.

That is a strange one.
The glow plugs/relay would not give you a lack of power, but you may want to test the glow plugs with a mutlimeter for continuity or resistance (one end on the tip of the glow plug and another on the block of the engine). If one is duff you could replace it. It could well be that the relay is gone, but I doubt it.
When replacing the EGR, it is usually good to recalibrate it. It is done with Diagbox/Lexia. Usually a bad EGR will give you rough idle, etc., rather than low power. To eliminate the lack of power with the EGR you could blank it and see if anything changes.

Is this not a possible electrical or BSI issue? If the EGR or glow plugs aren't working properly, that shouldn't result in total lack of power, particularly in the sporadic and erratic way as described.

It's the central computer that manages and integrates the electrical systems. It might be thinking there's a fault when there isn't one (other than a fault within itself).

The engine will move slightly when put into reverse so could the engine wiring harness be loose where it plugs in ?
