Starter Motor/Solenoid
#11
A quick check will be to follow the above and check the starter after connecting the jump lead but before disconnecting anything. Connect the jump lead to the engine block as that's the best route for the starter current.

Hi there, any help greatly appreciated, my Berlingo multispace 1.6 desire petrol 2006 won't start, RAC started it from the starter or solenoid on Saturday and I was able to drive home, Battery is fine, of course as soon as I got home and turned it off it won't start again and it has been very cold this week. I rang mechanic he told me to put negative jump lead on gearbox/engine block (to ground I think) and other end on neg on battery, it clicks but doesn't start like it did for RAC guy. My problem is I don't really know what the starter motor or gearbox look like and where to ground to the engine block? I wish I had seen where he made the connections as I am just fishing around and connecting to metal bits that I can see/reach.

Should the ignition be turned as if to start or just put the key in when I am attempting to ground?

Unless I can start it I can't get it to the mechanic..... Undecided

thank you

Did your RAC man jump start it?. If so then :-

The red jump lead goes to the Positive terminal on the battery , marked with a cross or Positive sign and usually but not always has a thick red wire leading to the starter motor. You can follow that wire from the battery to find the starter motor.

The black jump lead goes to the negative terminal on the battery , marked with a minus sign . Some models the negative terminal is hidden away making it difficult to connect a jump lead. What is done is to connect the black jump lead to the engine/gearbox somewhere. Also there may be a terminal mounted on the inner wing which is used for jump leads.

Try that if you are going to try to jump start it.

Buy yourself a haynes manual for it or look on the internet for more tips.
