[Transmission] Gearbox replacement

I have a 2011 1.6 diesel berlingo van
I have recently had the clutch and gearbox replaced, after which, the van was great……until….

About a week later, I was driving the van when there was a whining from the engine when I accelerated, and the van went into limp mode, and the van began producing an astonishing amount of smoke from the exhaust. 
I managed to get it back home and it has now been taken back to the garage where the gearbox and clutch was installed. I checked the oil level when this happened only to find it was bone dry, even though the diagnostics indicated that the oil was ok when I turned the key in the ignition. 
My question is, could this lack of oil have anything to do with the gearbox or clutch replacement? Or rather, does the engine oil have to be dropped if the gearbox is replaced? I don’t want to sound like I’m accusing the mechanic if I ask him the question. Or is it just bad luck on my part?

The engine oil does not have to be dropped when changing the gearbox / clutch so the low engine oil should not be anything to do with that.

Are you sure the oil is low..... some of the oil dipsticks had a plastic end on them which has been known to break off, is your dipstick this type?
This could explain why the dash indicator shows the oil level to be ok but no oil is showing on the dipstick.

Sounds like Turbo problems.

Had a simular experience. It was the gasket for the EGR that was blown. Due to the egr was a little loose. Limp mode and it smelled like bad/sour exhaust in the engine bay

Thanks for your advice. Turns out the turbo had blown, apparently causing the engine to but oil at an alarming rate. I got the van picked up and taken back to the mechanic who now says the engine has seized. So, I’m now on the lookout for an engine. Anyone ?
