Have a look at the linkage in case one of the 'arms' is bent or the end coupling is worn and floppy. I'd suggest popping the linkages off at the gearbox end and manually moving each selector to 'feel' any engagement and see if you can actually get it into a 'real' neutral. Also have a look at where the 'main' shaft comes from the gear lever - there's a bush in the coupling that may have failed and not allowing complete movement of the external selector rods.
Unless it is a problem that exists in the external linkage then it could be down to a bent/worn selector within the gearbox. Certainly trying to run it with 2 gears selected will destroy the gearbox.
Good luck!

It's always difficult to 'imagine' a problem from afar, but from what I understand the car stays 'immobile' when a gear is selected and the clutch depressed, but will move when the car is in neutral, clutch depressed.
Is the clutch actually releasing or might the clutch driven plate be stuck to the flywheel - this would give most of the symptoms mentioned but .......in neutral, whether the clutch is up or down the engine should turn/start without driving the gearbox. If started, clutch down, in any gear the engine would be permanently locked in gear and trying to start the car would move the car on the starter motor.
If the car is started in neutral and clutch put down no gears would engage - not without a big crunch.
Worth considering, esp if car has been laid up for a while.

Oh dear one very dead bearing !! Looks like you've found your problem.
Will you make the necessary repairs or get a recon unit ?

Oh dear.
That WAS a tapered roller bearing...
That means preload and all that sh!t.
First point;
COUNT the rollers!
You'll need to inspect every cogwheel in there for damage. (Rollers are made of HARD steel. Very hard. )
If there's damage to the cogs, that might be it for that gearbox.
Which model is it, anyway?
