New owner a few questions
#1
I've just picked up a '09 Berlingo XTR 93k miles

This forum has been a great help with both purchasing and sorting potential fixes. I picked it up fairly cheap  I have it booked for a general look over end of the week, fingers crossed nothing to expensive.

My car came with Roof bars and a Citroen roof rack, it looks kind of like Thule bars. Are they Thule just debranded or something OEM (hoping my Thule bike holders just go on)

My cigarette lighter socket - works/heats the lighter but not for my USB power (the rear cigarette light does work for my USB adapter). My first step would be to give the socket a clean, if I disconnect the battery does the radio need a code? I've seen mention here its coded to the chassis VIN (so I assume no code is needed?). If I need to take the socket out does it juts pry out or do I need to take off the panel (is that pry out or screwed in).

Can the car be trickle charged from the cigarette socket? Hoping to use a solar trickle charger to keep it topped off, if not I'd have to run a cable from the battery into the cabin is that fairly easy to do are am I looking a dismantling the dash Undecided

There's an invoice for the timing belt so mentally I checked that off in my mind, annoyingly however I can see at the very least the top timing belt cover has been left off. Rather than tempt fate I'm like to pick up a set new or 2nd hand is there any breakers/used dealers that the forum recommends? I'm assuming if I have them fitted I might as well just do the belt/water pump kit at the same time? Even though its been done at 86595miles doesn't fill me with confidence if that's how they did it.

Last and a little more worrying is there's oil on top of the engine just under the plastic cover. I'm hoping the guy spilled oil topping it up, maybe a rocker seal or could it be something more expensive?

Welcome to the forum!

I'll only comment on the oil in the last 3 photos, the others could be answered by more B9 knowledgeable members.

The oil that you see there comes from the crankcase breather. Generally there is a small rubber o-ring and it gets squashed with time and lets a bit of oil and it drips at exactly that spot. If you are bothered by the oil spillage you can replace the o-ring, something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziKR6M6ToSg
If I am not mistaken the dimensions of the o-ring that I have given in the description of the video are more than likely to be the same.

I had a similar problem with my previous (2010 XTR) front cigarette lighter socket, I got intermittent connection with a power adaptor and had the socket replaced. I remember that there was a lot of google debate at the time about whether power sockets and cigarette lighter sockets are 100% dimensionally compatible and I remember that I found that it was for most plugs but wasn't for the specific adaptor I wanted to use. Specifically the internal depth of the socket prevented this specific plug going in far enough to get a continuous electrical conductivity. With my current (2016 XTR) I power my phone etc from the USB socket.

Thanks for the help so far.

I replaced the 12volt cigarette socket (using info from this forum) with a 12volt power outlet off amazon, bit of a faff getting the panel out with hind sight maybe you can pull the socket out though the dash but. As even after the panel was out I couldn't remove the socket with out breaking it. I think you are meant to remove the metal insert first (battery disconnected), undo the bolt, bend in the metal tabs, this allows the space to feed the plastic holder out where it bulges once you work off the 2 clips holding it.

If you are going to take the panel out I recommend taking the lower centre console off as per the instructions on here vs this youtube. It's 4 extra screws at the bottom of the dash (2 in either foot well - 1 exposed 1 hidden). Reduces risk of snapping anything and much faster then wrestling match you see in that youtube. Chances are those clip nuts will fall down there anyway. I recommend finding them all because while 2/3 fell to the bottom, the last fell into gear linkage, Happy Hunting!

Any way I clipped the connector and fitted standard spade connectors, I used shielded ones as the connections are very close together. As per advice on the forum white was +pos and yellow/green was -neg. It fits the 25.5mm(ish) hole snug, the clips engaged to hold it down firmly and it has a small regular spline that matched the key way on the dash hole on the berlingo's which prevents the socket from rotating in dash.

As I didn't want the cover I cut away the cover/hinge, buffed it smooth with sand paper.

I had the car checked this morning, the garage said it was in good condition with only LH suspension ball joint needing replacing and O-ring for the breather. I'll get it serviced at the same time for peace of mind.

It also turns out the car does have a timing belt cover I was looking at the fan-belt opps Blush I'd also rang the garage on the invoice for the timing belt and they confirmed the belt/water pump was carried out by them, they mentioned the guy had kept on top of maintenance but no invoices in their system so I assume it was cash in hand.

I've bought a replacement battery cover SH off ebay as the current one is snapped at the flap. I've got a window tint kit for the back to give the car that full gangster vibe and privacy when I've got my bike in the back/getting changed. I'm sure that rear window will be fun! The lights are pretty yellowed so I'll have a go at buffing them up.

Hi there, to answer the trickle charging question, no, since all electrics on the B9 will shut down after a few minutes and the 12v socket cuts off immediately when the ignition is turned off.

Any solar trickle charger would need to connect straight to the battery but it wouldn't be too hard to set up a connection from inside, though I would fuse it at 10A or less so it can't go wrong from the other end without protection. (battery decides to melt the charger etc)

The rear socket is the same, the ignition needs to be on, and if it is and the engine is not started for approx 20 mins, all systems shut down to eco mode (cannot be over-ridden) and the battery light on the dash will flash every second until you start the engine again (it protects the battery from being run down by leaving things on) - having started the engine, you have another 20 mins of "no engine on" electrics to use but it's not practical except for short durations unless the engine is left running.

Sorry me again Big Grin

Back with more questions
When I bought it the guy said he had the interior/carpets professionally valeted (I doubt it because they still dirty). I've noticed some damp in the carpets it could just be condensation from his trying to DIY wash his carpets with a garden hose so I'm currently drying out the car with a dehumidifier if stays dry after some rain then I'll know. However things like the tie down hooks looked rusty which makes me think leak. When I had the rear carpet out I could feel they where damp nearest the corners by the tail gate. However on the drivers side passenger footwell carpet was wet. When I had an investigation I found water had collected here:

If I press on the the drivers side siding doors it has some play same with the window felt a little looser compared to the passengers side. But I can't see any damp on them. I was planning of taking those windows out to tint so those will get some lock-tight and tighten up in due coarse. I see other thread mention the rear tail lights as a possible source I guess the water could travel to the lowest point in the car.

I'm also in the middle of adding some cargo lights (to the roof-lining and tail gate) and I noticed there's a grommet missing from the passenger side on the tail gate. Does anyone have a part number? catcar.info doesn't clearly show it but I think its number78 "7518 95 tail gate post plug" any where to order that online?

While dropping the roof lining I broke these bits STAPLE 9128S1 CITROEN/PEUGEOT I think in the UK we call them fur tree/spruce clips is there anywhere I can buy them on-line or an alternative?

One US website has them listed as
[*]Trim Panel Retainer
[*]Light Gray Nylon
[*]Head Diameter: 21mm
[*]Stem Diameter: 7.7mm
[*]Stem Length: 16mm
[*]Replaces Peugeot & Citroen: 9128.S1
[*]10 Per Package

Any tips/warnings for getting behind the roof liner? There always seems to be some hidden catch (literally!)

In other news I used the AA solar panel charger and its hooked up via the OBD port. The glove box doesn't close with the big plug in there I bought a 'slim' extension lead but that still just fouls the glove box however a bit of force clicks it closed and since you have to unplug the solar charger when you start the car, I figure it'll save where and tear on the cars OBD. When I have time I might just pop of the plug leave in the dash and run the extension into the foot-well. I replace the battery cover with one that was less damaged but not as perfect as shown on the ebay photo (was another cover) The oil leak was fixed, the breather was not even clipped in so that's why there was oil coming from there while it was serviced they popped on an over sized O ring. I found what kind of rood rack was fitted, its the kind that going in the bin. I plan on going in another direction to haul the kids bikes.

For the clips, try https://peugeotcitroendsparts.com/ as they have all the wee silly parts you would struggle to find elsewhere. Use their contact us link and a guy called Mike will respond with the part you need. Send them your reg / vin number and a description of the part & where it goes etc.
