Play in steering
#1
For the last couple of MOT's, my garage have reported "slight play in LH steering rack joint".

Is it possible to tighten something up ?

Haynes says no !

Slight play in steering rack joints is a very common MOT advisory as almost all vehicles have some slight play in the steering rack.

If the play is excessive it will more then likely be in the inner tie rod ball joint, so the inner tie rod would need to be replaced, they are readily available,  just take a look on ebay.

.Is that the one that needs a special tool to remove/re-fit? Undecided

Yes, and there's lots of different types of special tool to do the job . . .  take a look on youtube for inner tie rod removal.

Depending on what access is like you don't always need a special tool, some of the knuckles have flats on them so a spanner can be used IF you can get in    Undecided  . . . it's sometimes possible to get in with mole grips, Stilsons, or some other type of grips.
