[Transmission] whine from transmission/bearings.
#1
hi all, new to this site, hope some of you can help me .
i have recently purchsed a berlingo 1.6hdi 07 plate with 60000 milew.
its started giving off a whine from the front, which i thought was a wheel bearing as when i turned a corner the whine was louder.
changed the bearing and the whines still there.Sad, i have been under the van and cannot seem tho find out where its comming from.
i took it to a local garage and they said it needed two front wheel bearings even tho i told them that i had one side done already and the noise was still there.
could it be comming from a drive shaft?
is it common for the wheel bearings to go with 60000 miles on it???

any advise would be much help.

p.s. noise still there when out of gear and cluch depressed.

cheers
michael

Hi Michael
Does the noise change when you operate the clutch pedal, if so its your thrust bearing which give problems on these models. Check it with the van running but not moving also check the gearbox for oil. Could well be the other wheel bearing. Did the garage tell you there was wear in both wheel bearings?

thanks for the reply,
operating the clutch pedal does not affect the noise even when out of gear and free wheeling noise still there, checked the oil which was ok and changed 1 wheel bearing. i have been under the van with the wheels off the ground and i think the noise sounds like it comming from where the drive shafts enter the gear box?? is this diff knowen to give problems?
garage said that both front wheel bearings need replacing and that one on the rear is going too?
thinking now that i should change the other side of the front bearings, this would then cancel this out.
has anyone had any problems with drive shafts or cv joints on these vans?

thanks again

Id get the other wheel bearing in michael. im not aware of any probs with the diffs but maybe someone else knows better, did you press the other wheel bearing in? If it wasnt fitted correctly it may well be damaged. easier to do wheel bearings than gearbox. Good luck
