Thank you Rasputin. We have been un the UK for just on a year, having arrived at the peak of Covid. I have bought a pair of Berlingos- a red 2004 1.6 Forte and blue 2005 Desire. I was unaware of the rear axle issue and the Forte has just failed MOT for this reason and i have ordered a refurb. unit from Imaxle. The Desire is in better nick and has already had a transplant. Coming from sunny South Africa where our vehicles are generally rust free and kept in garages, I was (and still am) horrified at the undercarriage damage to your vehicles. First priority is to clean up and underseal mine. What is your opinion of the lanolin tratment ? No doubt lots of queries to follow.

I recently watched these two vids on broken rear axles and noted that it isn't an easy fault to spot!

I don't have any experience of underfloor sealing - I suggest you post that as a query in itself for knowledgeable replies from others. I only know of lanolin as the grease from sheep's wool! Used a lot in shampoos.

One of our members did exposure tests on raw steel and Lanolin came out on top.

Many thanks for all replies. The lanolin treatment seems to work very well, leaving a non drying rubbery finish which sheds water. I had never heard of this before coming to the UK, but then we had no need for this in the SA dry climate. Lots of info on UTube

It's the chemical produced by Sheep, to keep their wool fleece waterproof when out on the wild moors.

That's it.
I remember a bit more now - it is used in shampoo and bubble bath to give that ivory marbling effect, a bit like the spun sugar in Blackpool rock. And in Brylcreem etc, not that there are many Teddy Boys or even Punks around these days.
I did hear once that earwax is even better, but can't be harvested in sufficient quantities.
