Headlights fail
#1
Shocked
I have a little Romahome Duo motorhome based on a 2000 (X) Berlingo 1.9D.

Driving home last night, the headlights suddenly failed...........which was nice at 50mph on a pitch black country road!!!!!
I flipped the headlight stalk from dip to main and they came back on? It did this twice on the way home and i think the dashboard lights also went out.
I'm thinking possible light stalk failure?

Any ideas please chaps.

Thanks.

I think it might be something else, as the default for any stalk failure or error is to put the headlights ON, irrespective if you have turned them on or not. This is what happened with my com200 unit. There was a problem and the slightest touch to the stalks it turned the headlights on. I would have thought the 1.9D would be the same.

I've had a look today and I think my vehicle is an earlier, pre Com200 because mine doesn't have a seperate radio control lever and the stalks look like earlier versions from photos off the net.

I've given the wiring and clips behind the stalk a good "waggle" but no result. I've also looked at the fuses under the bonnet and all seems OK.
Only fly in the ointment is that I've had a problem with the rear offside light cluster where by when the lights and indicators are on, if you then press the brake pedal, the brake light in the o/s cluster flashes instead of the indicator bulb. I think that's now sorted after I cleaned up all the connections and bulbs but I'd be surprised if it was that that had cause ALL the headlights to go out?

I've found fuses M12 to M15 under the bonnet and they're OK but I'm wondering if there's a headlight relay somewhere? (my Haynes manual is clear as mud!!!!!!)

I believe that there is at least one relay there for the dipped headlights - but no idea where it is - shown in Haynes as item 18, but no location. It's not the old 'clicky' type, so you can't hear it.......
The rear light issue is caused by a poor earth to the indicator bulb - when 'lit' it tries to earth via the brake or side light bulb of lower wattage, causing that to flash instead. A good clean up of earths or even an additional earth wire will sort it permanently. Unlikely to cause the headlight problem, unless it causes the relay to let go, which sounds as though it happens all on its own.

When I look in the Haynes manual, item 18 is only shown on 12:29, Diagram 3 which is for "later models"
12:20 Wiring diagrams, starts with earlier models in which item 18 isn't shown anywhere.

What's the cut-off year?  Which set might I need for my 2000 (X).

Thanks

Headlight relays are under the dash, next to the fusebox.
