hi all.
just asking if anyone can help out here. got a 2007 1.6 hdi berlingo, just recently over past 2 weeks have this faint exhaust fume smell slightly coming into the cabin when heater is on etc. I have checked around injectors and no leaks, had van up on ramps and found bit of oil but cleaned all this off, used van for a week and still lingering, no exhaust leaks as far as can see, am i missing anything here? breather hoses all ok, nothing loose etc, just wondering if any alternatives please? bit annoying as trying to keep warm with window open daily is not much fun!
many thanks.

Just a guess, but are any fumes coming from the crankcase breather by the airbox ? Or perhaps the EGR valve down below the fuel filter (IIRC).

A leaky heater matrix might also smell of cooking Anti-freeze - often a 'spicy' smell that might be mistaken for something else? Maybe get the car thoroughly warmed up & smelling, then stop (you prob can't leave the heater blower on with engine off, but that would be ideal) and leave at tickover with the bonnet up, windows shut. If it still smells possibly a water problem?
You may also be suffering from the exhaust being sucked back in via a poor door or window seal and the heater is helping to circulate it?

hi.
thanks for your reply.
would you have a picture of the crank case breather pipe please? as i have had all the air pipes off and rechecked them, top air filter side and near to fuel filter and cant really see anything obvious. I had suspected the dpf unit under the main air filter housing but yet again nothing obvious I can see. Its a odd smell, not water related i dont think or antifreeze etc, just this small toxic smell when heater is on, did suspect the lower flexi exhaust pipe if that had a leak but nothing found! seems a mistery at the minute.

Sorry, no pictures to hand but @ saskak did a lot of work on his 1.6HDi emissions so will probably have pictures and maybe a video. You mentioned a DPF, I'd assumed it was a 1.6 before DPF but maybe I'm wrong.

Is it definitely an exhaust smell rather than a general 'something's burning' smell, and if not, could it be the heater fan itself i.e. something electrical overheating?

i have the 1.6 hdi 2007 with a dpf unit under the air filter housing or its something to do with exhaust circulation anyway.

hi, nothing burning its a exhaust/emission like of smell, so its obviously got a leak somewhere.
I also noticed a gurgling kind of noise sometimes while driving its sounding like its from the expansion bottle side is this normal, only happens now and then, not sure if this is related or not to the smell issue?
thanks

I think that's the EGR pipework. The DPF will be at the front under the turbo.

Here is a video of the crankcase breather: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziKR6M6ToSg
I always had an oil leak from that and the video was a try to seal it with a fatter o-ring. I guess that you could get fumes from that if there is no seal at all or it has disintegrated completely.
Maybe check if the EGR valve is seated correctly and it is not blowing gasses from that, and potentially the EGR cooler as well and associated piping. Sometimes the air filter box digs a hole on the top of the EGR valve itself, but there should not be too much gasses going to the top of the valve.
You had it on ramps, did you check if the exhaust flexi is intact and none of the clamps missing/broken? Mine does not have a DPF, but it has a flexi from the upper to the middle exhaust section. If that is somewhat broken, the exhaust gasses might go towards the cabin around the egr cooler (I think).
