glow plug light

can some 1 tell me why my glo plug light goes out straght away and the van will nott start 1997 800 van diesel cheers all

glow plug is on a timer, zero degrees it stays on 1 second, minus 5, 5 seconds, minus 10, 10 seconds, or thereabouts.
