[Engine] Car goes into Limp mode - Fuel system problem
#1
It seems that I last visited Berlingo Forum back in 2013 . . .   However - I'm back, and on my 3rd Berlingo, a 2004 2.0 HDi model, which I purchased last year.

When I got it, it had about 83,000 miles on the clock, and has run fine since then, with one or two minor oddities.

However, it now has a problem.   To cut a long story short, the engine warning light went on, it went "Beep", and the car went into limp mode.  I had just set out on holiday - heading for Keswick from the north of Scotland, and was between Perth & Inverness on the A9.  So we pulled over into a layby, turned off the engine, and restarted it.  The car ran normally for 25 miles or so, then went into limp mode again.   So we went a few miles further, and called out the RAC.  They came, plugged in their gadget to find the fault, and told me it was a fuel system fault - but they didn't know what.   After chatting to them, we agreed that I would continue, and see what happened.  25 miles later, the car went into limp mode again, and after turning off engine and re-starting, I headed for my mother's house since she happened to live nearby.

That all happened on a Saturday afternoon - 9 days ago.  Monday morning I tried local garages, and found one that agreed to have a look at the car if and when they had time.   We borrowed my mother's car and continued on our holiday in the Lake District, then came back this afternoon.  I went around to the garage to see what they had found and they basically told me 2 things:

1) It needed a main dealer to diagnose the problem.  Main dealers have technology that enables them to get a the fault code - technology that is not available to independent garages.  (I suspect that a Peugeot dealer would be as good as a Citroen dealer since Berlingos and Partners are basically identical.)

2) The garage boss was confident that running the car in limp mode was not going to cause any harm to the car - even if I ran it for a few hundred miles.

Any thoughts?   Finding nearby main dealer who would be able to look at the problem any time soon could be challenging.

1. Not true

2. Foolish statement by him...how could he know.

Using a non Citroen OBD diagnostic gadget, you can only get engine fault codes, called P-Codes. BUT...There is a copy of the official "dealer" system available on ebay and from other online vendors called DiagBox which is the proper Citroen diagnostic software and interface, bootlegged. Anyone can buy that one, but it needs a bit of PC savvy to install on a laptop and needs Windows 7 32-bit mostly. I'd expect most if not all PSA independent garages would have it, try searching for one of those in your area?

Causes of limp mode can be many, from boost pressure issues (too low or too high) to fuel pressure (too low / too high), throttle position errors at the pedal, lots of things but mostly fuel, boost and the like.

You could get a Bluetooth OBD adaptor, I would recommend the Carista one as it works well on Citroen (don't buy the Carista software though - it does nothing useful on a Citroen) , or the VGate iCar one and use an app called "Torque" from the app store (if you have an Android phone) then connect to the adaptor and click "read fault codes" to get what the error is. These adaptors are about £20. Some (many) do not work with Citroen at all but I have these two and I know they work.

VGate adaptor (£15.99)

Thanks very much, Zion. That is a wee bit over my head since I am not a particularly technical person - but it is useful.

Hi,
You have to find someone with Lexia. That it what dealers are using for diagnostic.
With Lexia you can find the "exact" code of the problem and then you can post that error here.
Rac guy or that local garage probably have "universal" code diagnostic reader.
You can find forum users with Lexia to help you out.

Best regards,

Lexia is the interface, Diagbox is the software. This is what I said earlier.
