I recall someone asking recently about the auxilliary belt being half on and half off the pulleys ....... here is my recent experience of similar.
I had a noisy whining and clattery 1.6Hdi Engine ..................
It all started with rattling from the Cat heat shields at the front of the engine .... so I " temporarily " used a wedge of wood to secure it.
Months later the wood was still there and working well.
Then a month later the whining started - sounded like auxilliary belt issue - so I fitted a new belt and tensioner but still the same.
Timing belt had been done around 20k ago but for peace of mind I renewed it plus pump etc
Despite this the whining still there !
Oh well at least I I knew the important bits were ok so I relaxed for a while as I was busy busy busy.
To clarify, when both belts etc were replaced I checked all pulleys and spun / felt the alternator and the A/C pump and all felt / sounded good.
Now fast forward a month and I went under the bonnet to give all a once over before I drove 150 miles to the aiport and crikey !! the aux belt was half off the pulleys !!
Car still runing ok.
Looking closer I found the alternator pulley had come off the shaft but belt still driving on the shaft itself.
One new alternator later all was back to perfection.
Moral is if you have a belt coming off your pulleys or have whining give the alternator pulley an extra special inspection !!

Geoff.
