[Engine] Rattling/grating sounds - breakdown.
#1
Video
Whilst driving today my berlingo started making a loud rattle/grating noise when the accelerator was pressed in all gears, I pulled over as the noise was very loud and well it scared me.  Im closer to 60 than 50 and female driver and know nothing about engines.  Mine is a 1.6 turbo diesel btw.
I called breakdown and he stuck his head under the bonnet and said he didn't have a clue, although he wasnt a mechanic.  Not sure why I pay for roadside assistance if they send a non mechanic.  He drove the car up the ramp onto his truck while the car rattles and grated.  When we arrived at my house (I live next door to a garage, so thought this the safest bet) he drove the car off his truck and the noise was really loud, he manouvered it into a parking spot and... the noise stopped!  I drove around the block after he had gone and still no noise but the garage cant fit me in till next week and I'm afraid to go far.  Any ideas?

Does the noise occur when just revving the engine but not in gear?.

If it only occurs when driving /moving it may have been a stone stuck in the brake caliper . Manoeuvring around may have dislodged it.

I sat with it in neutral and revved it and it still made the noise.

Noise seems related to engine revs and quite a 'light' sound - something like an alternator/belt idler/heat shield/air con compressor, rather than an internal engine sound. Could be clutch release bearing.  Not sure why it should stop of its own accord, and probably better not to use it until checked over. Have a look under the bonnet at all of the belts/pulleys and look for anything that looks 'eaten'. Don't think it can be brake related as the noise is there when the car is stopped.
Good luck!

I will definitely be getting it checked over.

Thinking over how it happened - I'd just pulled over for an ambulance to pass and so turned my wheel left to pull over and then all right to pull out again as I pulled out I accelerated faster through my gears than I had been doing, as traffic was catching up.  When the noise stopped was when the guy was maneuvering the car around the car park to park it.  So maybe it could be related to turning the wheel or pushing the accelerator to the deck?

Possibly the power steering pump/belt/idler - a quick check of the fluid level and a look for leaks is about all that you can do. Also start the engine and turn the steering lock to lock and see/listen to what's going on.
God luck!

Any oil in it ?
So where does this bit go then ?

Sounds to me like something touching a spinning pulley, like a guard or heat shield, and it is much worse when the car is pointing upward on the slope, louder on going up and again when he reversed back down the hump a bit, which would coincide with accelerating and the engine being pushed backwards under load.

Reminiscent of the sounds heard when spectating at banger racing ! - I wonder if an engine mount might have broken, allowing a moving part to find a fixed one?

That's what I think too. Maybe the bottom dog-bone is burst or the big mount on the driver's side.
