I want to fit a small 6 inch or so led light to the rear of my van, thinking of taking the live from the reversing light but making it switchable so only on when selecting reverse and needing extra light, will this mod need a relay?
Cheers Wayne.

A small led might not put too much strain on things, but using a relay and perhaps an inline fuse is always good practice.
I wouldn't bother with the switch though.
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

There are regulations in place about the power of reversing lights/lights pointing to the rear and the LED that you are thinking of adding may well exceed them, esp. as the original fitment was non-LED. I think that your suggestion would fail an MoT.

You could just remove the light cluster with the reversing light on, put the gear stick in reverse and use a multimeter to check for the +12vdc wire and just tap in to that.
