Hi Guys
Trying to change my 1.4 Berlingo plugs and my normal 16mm plug spanner doesn't seem to want to turn and I think the socket is jamming in the tube cos plugs can't be THAT tight ..it's almost as if the tube narrows down the bottom and although you can feel the socket go over the plug it doesn't want to turn. Does one need a special 16mm plug spanner (I tried all 4 plugs and they all seem to have the same issue???

I had a similar experience with a Corsa and the plugs were that tight. I had to use a bar to turn them and luckily they came out. You can get thin wall sockets or grind your present one down a bit.
So where does this bit go then ?

Not sure about expansion rates of aluminium compared to steel but might be worth soaking threads with freeing fluid and warming engine up before trying to remove

If the socket goes over the plug without a problem, maybe a bit of grease on the outside of the socket would help? Failing that a bit of grinding or a thin walled socket, as suggested above.

Thanks guys all good ideas .. I must admit the plugs haven't been changed in 18 months so will try some WD40 or similar and also try on a warm engine ..It's hard to get a sock with a universal joint on it as it's not a direct link to the actual plug .. you simply cannot get a socket with a straight shaft in there.

I use a double-ended box-type plug spanner - these are readily available and have a thin wall - then use a socket on the 'top' end to get it moving.

Brilliant thanks .. just looked thru my toolkit and the smallest I have is a 23mm so will find a 16mm box spanner ..great idea cos they also have quite a thin wall too!! Will advise on progress.
