Bought another 10 plate…
#1
Music
Just bought a used 10 plate, all seemed okay at the time ?

It’s not that bad, but a the EML came on 5 miles up the road throwing up P0238 which is supercharger boost sensor… Cleaned 130k worth of oil off of that, the temp and MAF for good measure. Went to recheck for the code and noticed a cable that had split with an attempt to tape it up. I’ve twisted the cable back together, any ideas what it is?

The engine seems to be a bit lean, black smoke over 2k revs. I was hoping that cleaning the sensor would solve it but it seems not.

So apart from that, it did one odd thing today and it’s a bit concerning. I went  to start her up after about an hour or so of sitting and it just ticked over with no start. Plenty of battery… I noticed when I switched the headlights on nothing was lighting up. Everything was working on parking lights but even the dash lights went off when I switched to main lights. I don’t really know what I did next but I think I just took the key out and tried again after playing with the lights and it started like a dream again. No codes, just confusion.

Any thoughts? I’d love it if someone could tell me what the broken wire is as it will bug the bell out of time.

Looks like lots of 'extra' wiring in there. Are there any accessories fitted, or missing?

The orange and red cables look like main power feeds to something. The no lights and no start issue could be related to wiring at the BSI, especially a bad main feed. If the BSi fails to respond to the ECU for start authorisation, then it will just crank when you turn the key, but will not start. Also the lights would potentially act funny if the BSI is not properly online.

By the way when the engine turns over but won't start, this is termed "cranking over" and when it starts, and is running, but you aren't pressing the accelerator, this is termed "ticking over" or "Idling"

Thanks Zion, I will say that as soon as I connected the cable back up the engine light went out so I was pretty pleased but it’s just come back on. Still smoking too so a problem with not enough air somewhere along the line I expect.

Thanks for the terminology, its ticking over nicely and apart from the one time it wouldn’t start it’s been a great purchase. I put the key to my old van (exactly the same model and year) on my key ring so I did question whether it was the old key confusing the immobiliser? I’m not sure what range the coils need to pick it up? I’ve taken it off now for piece of mind lol.

Hopefully they work it out on the lexia on Friday, fingers crossed I don’t need a turbo ?

Ah the extra key would have possibly caused an issue, they really need to be in the ignition for the immobiliser chip to be "seen" but it's possible it could see two chips. Worth taking that off in case it is a problem.

It's good that you're getting a Lexia scan as that will pick up all codes or issues. Could be the smoking is oil burning, as the DPF should capture all soot from overfuelling. Modern diesels emit no smoke from soot / fuel, even if not running correctly.

She’s still starting so I’m going to jinx it and blame the other key.

I have just noticed though that one side of the intercooler is literally caked in what I guess is oil or maybe it’s just mud?! The fins look completely blocked when I look through the front of the van but they look clean on the other side. Maybe it’s just 12 years of shite? Either way I’ll get that clean when I get a chance but have no idea if it could cause black smoke.

Also I just realised the back end is sitting low. It looks even though so I’m a bit confused as I thought it was a coil spring but maybe a shock? There’s a knocking when I go over drain covers but if I go over a speed bump there’s nothing.

Probably oil on the intercooler. You may not be out of the woods (garage) yet. Best to get the turbo and oil level checked.

Back end, only the springs affect ride height, not the shocks - they (shocks) only damp the spring action. Most likely a broken spring or two, the ends do snap off. If enough breaks off (one coil will do) then it sits lower and the spring will clatter if it droops like over a depression in the road. Different behaviour from a hump. Shock end pin or rubber bush may cause the clatter too.

Thanks for the advice Zion, I haven’t had time to try and look but from what you’ve said I don’t think I need to as it’s definitely a spring or two.

I’ve been looking at getting the springs, I was going to replace both for the sake of it… I think I’m going nuts but I can only find the front springs. I’m hedging my bet in thinking that these are the same as the back but would you happen to know?

No, they should definitely be different, and now I am paying PROPER attention to the section you posted in, we need to move the thread to the B9 section, not M49 as that (M49) is the earliest Mk1 version. 2008-2018 normally identifies the B9 for parts online so use that when searching. No one online except us, use the term B9 as that is a Citroen designation. Put MKII or better still as above, "Berlingo 2008-2018" when searching for parts.

B9 suspension:
The front is a MacPherson strut type arrangement with a captive spring on the strut and the rears are separate coil springs with inboard shock absorbers, only common to the B9 Berlingo (your one) and the Grand Picassso C4.

Anyway, there should be plenty available. Here is one such search, but may be worth calling them with your Reg / vin number to confirm exact fitment and if all the same, pick the cheapest!

https://www.euspares.co.uk/parts-catalog...HA%2CL%2CR

(I know this particular vendor is showing "out of stock" but use the details to ask elsewhere online, I just did a quick Google search and chose the first to come up)

Hi Zion, sorry I didn’t realise I’d posted in the wrong place, I can’t figure out how you move a thread? It’s a 2010 plate but has the old look before the body changed so is that an m59?. I think it’s the last year they made them, I know when I had a new window screen they brought the wrong size meant for the newer model and got confused. If I search for B9s they all look the newer type.

I’ve managed to order the rear springs, hopefully do them Friday if that’s actually what the problem is ?

I just swapped the MAP sensor as it’s only £12 and it stopped the black smoke but with another annoying issue… It goes from pulling like it should and then suddenly lacks all go. I don’t think it’s slump mode, it just won’t rev the same and goes completely gutless. Like 0-60 in 40 seconds or something ridiculous, foot down for a minute or so and it will finally creep up to 70mph.

I can literally turn the engine on and off while I’m driving and it will sort itself for a few minutes until it happens again. It was smoking before but never once lacked power, in fact it was a bit sporty because it was overfuelling I guess. Any ideas what’s changed?

I cleaned the maf, maybe I fcuked it using contact cleaner instead of the proper mass cleaner? Is that really a thing?
