Ignition Switch
#1
I think the ignition switch on my 1.6 Multispace has a worn contact, turning the key often does nothing (no click) I want to add a button switch to fire the starter but my Haynes shows the circuit but is not colour coded. I have two groups of wire to the switch Orange and Green/Yellow stripe I shorted these and nothing happened the other group is three wires Blue Red Orange how do I short the solenoid? Both Orange wires?

I did wonder about this as a solution for a problem that had arisen a while back. Although you could simply add an additional switched supply to the starter in order to bypass the key starting, other things happen when you turn the key to the required spot to start the car. The headlights get switched off, as does the heater, and possibly the wipers too in order to reduce the battery load. This would not happen with a simple by-pass as there presumably are driven relays to perform the above.

I have done this on a Series Landrover and a Freelander!

The start wire is terminal 3 on the ignition switch, the wire should be marked "100" - terminal 1 is the main battery feed via fuse MF7 to the key barrel switch, then terminal 2 is ignition "on" back to the PSF1 (engine bay fusebox) - colours according to the M59 diagrams are 1 = Black (NR) 2 = Yellow (JN) and 3 - Red (G)

I've attached the diagrams for the circuit.
