Never let someone work on your Berlingo !
#1
Grandson kindly offered to replace the glow plugs on my M59 due to my recent spinal surgery - I wanted to do it myself but my wife insisted it was him or the garage !

The result - two glow plug tips snapped off and only two replaced with new  Angry

In the end I got involved and as the engine turned freely by hand the tips were clearly secure and safe so I'm now driving around in the vain hope the plug tips will make their own way out.

Luckily I'm able to make the tooling myself to extract the tips so no real big deal there apart from the work of course or I could even remove the injectors and go down that route.

Either way a pain in the proverbial !!

Thats me vented, time now for a whisky and codeine cocktail to help me sleep / forget / calm down  Tongue

Use a little torque wrench set to less than the tightening torque and at least you'll never snap one. If it won't undo at 8nm then more wd40 and more hot runs until it will. At least you'll never put enough torque on it to break the tip off.

I always thought that only reverse torque wrenches do that. The normal ones do not do torque on reverse, or at least my silverline does not do it.

Mine is a ratchet one and works either way round, the clutch still slips at the specified torque? It's just a ball pressed into a detent with a spring and the force to overcome it and force the ball to jump out of the detent is the torque setting, try undoing something tight with a lot less torque setpoint, it should still click.

Update : no further progress unfortunately.

I got the engine good and hot today with a drive drove at 85 - 90 for around fifty miles on the motorway followed by a good thrashing through the lanes ( as I normally do on this particular route ) and a quick check reveals the tips are still stuck firmly in place.

I also checked for any blow-by and there is none so they can stay there for the forseeable future unless / until I get inspiration.

I'm keeping the necessary tooling and spare glow plugs in the car in case a tip decides to come out so that I'm able to pop a new plug in on the side of the road as it is a quick and easy job putting the new ones back in.

Grandson called around this afternoon looking rather sheepish and offered me a bottle of Penderyn Whisky as a peace offering, I let him off the hook.

The tightening torque setting is for the threads of the glow plug, it's not the breaking torque of the tip.

Penderyn is actually not too bad, hope it was from the special selection...
I am sure the plugs will come out eventually. Maybe if they get cold during the night and hot during a drive there might be a chance, expansion/contractions and so on.

I know that, but if you don't exceed the thread tightening torque, then you shouldn't snap the end off when undoing them.

If no one believes this, then bash on and see how you get on!
