Many thanks for all the comments posted.
In a way I'm pleased that there' s no simple answer !
Cliffy's experience of 90 BHP not being quite up to the job is very useful to me, my current plan is to keep my trusty 1.9 diesel and to buy a more powerful multispace to tow the caravan.
Do members think that the 2008 - 2012 multispace 1.6 HDi 110 XTR would be up to the job ?
Which engine was fitted B9, K9, M59 ?
Thanks again, Mike

Fortunately traffic made way for me and I was able to trundle onwards, but it's not something I'd want to do again !
As an interim term measure while you still have the same car-caravan combo, consider fitting amber beacons to the top rear of the caravan. Slow vehicles such as large cranes which do around 40 on the motorways are obliged to use them, and us truck drivers keep a look out for amber beacons from a long way off - we absolutely do not want to get stuck behind them! I also know M3 j11 as I often do deliveries along the south coast, and you would do yourself a big favour by adding beacons.
They don't need to be on all the time, just when pulling out if you wish, yet still wouldn't need extra plugs/sockets - I would use one of those remote garage door opener switches (such as ebay item 313970813808) to turn the beacons on/off remotely from within the car, then they would only need to be spliced with the switch receiver unit into your caravan sidelight circuit I would imagine.

Brilliant and very helpful advice - this is thinking outside the box and I really appreciate it !
I'll certainly look into this.
It's also good to hear from someone who has experienced j11 onto m3 from red light on the slip road.
