Modutop/Zenith - which years? MPG?

Hi all,

My trusty Desire has gone over 200k miles and is visibly and audibly on its last legs...

So, I am naturally now looking for the same thing but newer to replace it!

I was pleased to see that the B9 generation also included options containing the modutop roof windows, ceiling storage and swivelling roof bars which I found so useful on the old Desire.

I am therefore waiting for a decently low mileage one to come up however can anyone tell me which years they were made? One would assume they were made the whole way between 08 and 18 but the only ones I've seen so far have been 08-11 - were they phased out as options after this?

In the Peugeot Partner form, I am pretty sure we are talking just about the Tepee Zenith. I don't think these options appear on any other variant unless I am mistaken?

In the Berlingo form, I've seen them in the VT, VTR and XTR specs - any advance on this?

Checking on autotrader, the B9 Modutop/Zeniths always tend to have a slightly lower combined MPG than the standard options - is this just down to the roof bars? I think it shows it at 49mpg which is the same I get from the Desire. However the usual MPG for B9s is about 53.

Any knowledge would be very handy!

Hello, I used to have one of the last M59 shape Berlingo Desire [2007 1.6Hdi with modutop] which I suspect I would still have now as I had it from only a few years old but someone decided to rear end me and wrote it off a few years back..So on to your question

I have a 2008 B9 XTR that has Modutop and has rails that can be swivelled.

Some things to note, the Modutop on the B9 is not [in my opinion] as useful as the one on the older M59. Gone are the overhead bins in front of he rear seat passengers that also contained useful charging points. The overhead part is just a shelf type arrangement. Also note that not all of the model B9 vehicles with the Modutop come with the large rear overhead bin as standard but if they do, this has a couple of sliding doors in it, so the rear seat passengers can use that for stowage [but they obviously have to turn around to access it] 

Also note that it is only the earlier B9s that have the swivelling rails [you can tell the swivelling ones as they are shorter than the 'fixed' version]

Another thing that might affect what year you end up buying is that I think about post 2012 [I might be wrong about then year, which if I am, someone will I'm sure correct] is that those models have the eolys fluid bags that 'dose' the diesel to reduce emissions and from what I've read can be a bit troublesome [plus it's something that can only be replaced easily by a dealer]

Finally with regards to MPG, if the on board computer thing is to be believed my 2008/XTR 1.6Hdi returns 54.3 MPG and that is a mix of town and motorway driving with a few long distance trips thrown in, so not too bad. Think I used to get around 58 MPG with my M59 1.6Hdi Desire but the B9 is a bigger and I think, heavier, vehicle. 

Out of the two I actually preferred the M59 version for all round practicality, as I found the Modutop more flexible, I liked the fact that you could open the very rear windows [in the luggage area] and the rear overhead bin in the M59 was more solid. That said, the B9 version is more refined in comfort terms with better suspension and noise insulation.

I didn't know you can't open the rear windows, that's a bit annoying when camping in it...

I get what you mean about general better practicality of the M59, but all but a handful of them are not ULEZ compliant and Bristol is going clean soon so my hands are tied...

So the rear bin on the B9 is flimsy? Darn. Would you even bother looking for a B9 with the Modutop?

I think most [all?] the versions with the fitted roof rails are the modutop versions, so if you want the factory fitted roof rails then you have to go for that. While not as useful as the old M59 version, I still like the fact that the glass roof panels let in more light and there is some stowage in a shelf type arrangement even without the fitted bin [which is a lot more flimsy than the M59 version] 

With regards to whether it is worth looking for a modutop, that is entirely personal choice but from what I've seen when I was looking it doesn't seem to make that much difference is the used price of the vehicle.

If you buy a Diesel older than 2016 then it won't be ULEZ compliant, as it has to be EURO 6 as standard to meet the requirement. This began in 2016 models with Adblue etc. 2012 was Euro 5 and before that, less etc.

So I’ve not seen any post 2015 Berlingos or partners equipped with Modutop/zenith roof for sale. I guess they stopped making them around 2012 or so.

That’s a shame. Bristol clean air zone is dictating my storage and camping options!

FWIW my 2003 petrol 1.6 is "no charge" in all of the Clean Air Zones according to the Govt checker, and also London ULEZ exempt...

Yes, I think for petrol cars it’s euro 4 minimum in ulez, so less stringent.

Out of interest what mpg do you get?

TBH I've never bothered faffing with spreadsheets to work it out! Pretty sure I've seen threads here on it though with numbers - e.g. this one
