Redundant UREA system on my 66 Berlingo van.

I recently had the UREA warning light come on shortly followed by the engine management light even though the AdBlue tank was full and was working correctly. As I needed the van to go on holiday, I took it to a local garage who came recommended as being to solve these types of fault. They advised me that there was a small pouch of UREA which had run out and this was a pre AdBlue system that Citroen had fitted to the vans and that this ran in tandem with the AdBlue system. The garage also said the injector from this system was blocked and this was replaced. The fault was cleared and after a not inconsequential bill I drove the van away with a dent in my credit card.

I have subsequently been advised that the system could have been simply disabled as it is redundant and was superseded by the AdBlue system. I am now wondering why the garage didn't just do this which would have been much cheaper and less work. Could this redundant system have been disconnected and the fault code cleared? Why has Citroen left a redundant system on these vehicles? Any advice/views welcome.

Hi, and welcome.

The crossover vans which have both, are very common. I have never heard of anyone being able to disable one or the other without a remap but it's not a redundant system.

Eolys is used in cleaning of DPF (carbon particles), Adblue is involved in reducing Nitrous Oxide emissions. Eolys (which is in the pouch system) does reduce Nox but not to the level required as they passed into Euro 6 from the previous Euro 5 legislation. So, disabling the Eolys injection could lead to your DPF blocking earlier than otherwise.

You must be over 100k miles or had a leak, otherwise the pouch would have some left in it. 1L of Eolys lasts 100k miles unlike Adblue which constantly needs topped up. The vehicle detects the fuel flap being opened and injects a small amount of Eolys each time.

Adblue is used all the time while running.

Morning & Welcome.

In the B9 section of the forum, I think there are a few posts about some vehicles being fitted with both systems (Eolys & Adblue) for a while in order to meet some emissions standards while they were revising the engines. I'm not an expert on this, so am not sure if it could be disabled.

Thank you most helpful. The van has done under 100k but I suppose it relates to how many times the filler cap was opened during it’s previous life. I won’t be getting it disconnected.

Great stuff. I'm sure you're going to enjoy the van and the forum. We're a friendly bunch unlike most car forums..
