1.6 Petrol wont start. Error codes P3014 & P3010
#1
So my Berlingo is quite old it's on a 54 reg plate and I have run it for about 4 years. She has done 89k and I haven't had a problem till recently.

2 days ago, the engine suddenly lost power and started to miss like mad. I thought it was over. I towed her home and my mechanic replaced the coil pack which fixed the problem.

So the next day I am out driving and I noticed that the rev counter was staying quite high at around 1000-1500 rpm when idle. Bit strange I thought maybe we had knocked a pipe loose and it was letting some air in somewhere when he were changing the coil pack so I started home and suddenly the car just cuts out and dies.

Now, it will not start at all.

I am now getting error codes P3014 & P3010. We have replaced both the air intake sensor as well as the crank sensor but still no joy. While running a diagnostic as we tried to start the car apparently the computer wasn't picking up anything from the crank sensor at all.

Is this maybe an ECU problem? it seems very strange to have no problems at all for years then so many error codes pop up.

Many thanks all

Did you power wash the vehicle by any chance prior to it going wrong? Water can be in the ECU or the BSI and that could be the issue.

Next...
If the crank sensor fails, it will never start in a month of Sundays. I'd replace that first and see how you get on..that's the main signal for everything else. Injector timing, spark etc. Also worth checking, is the MAF sensor, try unplugging that and see if it runs. If so, new MAF.

But, my money would be on the crank sensor being responsible for the whole lot. Including the previous issue. A bad crank sensor will cause mad misfires. Once it cooled, it worked again (and I bet the coil pack was not required, hence the subsequent dead engine after it was replaced) and the next day, it went completely.

Some of the codes may be down to it not actually starting. Do the crank sensor and let us know how you get on. If it won't start with a new crank sensor, unplug the MAF and try again but I bet you don't get that far.

Sorry, just saw you'd replaced the crank sensor, then perhaps the wiring is chafed through. No signal means it's still reading badly and will not work like that. Is the sensor generating pulses (using a scope or meter, not an OBD scanner)

I haven't cleaned it in quite a few weeks and it's pretty dry here in the UK at the moment.

We replaced the crank sensor although it was quite loose and another sensor as pictured ( I cannot remember the name)

Really frustrating, my mechanic is busy now till Monday when we will take another look at it.

Looks like you've tried what I would suggest. (MAF and Crank)

If swapped, I'd then suspect a blown control system fuse or chafed wiring. MF fuses are hidden under the top layer of fuses in the fusebox in the engine bay.

Ill take a peek at that fusebox tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion!

So do we have another set of fuses underneath this one ?

Yep. See this:

On the lower left side, under the cable with the bolt connection. This is a pug but the Berlingo is near identical. You should have a row of large MF (Master Fuses) below the top. They can't be seen until you pull the top section up. The top tray may be rivetted down (yep) - thanks Citroen.

BSM1. Engine bay fusebox.

One of those powers the entire engine ECU, one powers the entire BSI, hence why I think this might be your problem.

We had a look today, unfortunately all of those beefy fuses were intact! My mechanic is going to have a play tomorrow and hopefully he can find a problem.

If its an ECU problem I'll have to grab one of those plug and play options on the forum

Have you tried to get communication with the ECU? I can't remember if that's been tried..

If you can connect to it, then the ECU will tell you what it's unhappy about most of the time, unless it's dead.
