[Warning Light] Urea problems
#1
I have a 2016 Berlingo hdi 100 with 24,000km. In July an orange warning light appeared, and my local garage tested and said one of the nox sensors was faulty but didn't know which one, so go to Citroen.

They checked and said nothing wrong with the car, cancelled the light and said there may be a software update if it reappears. It was ok for 30km so then back to Citroen. They said a nox sensor was faulty so changed it (€276) and then claimed the Urea tank is faulty and that needs changing as well (€1200 plus fitting etc). My question is why wouldn't this have shown up on their computer analysis? Confused

Is it still ok to drive for a while?

Thanks.

The Urea tank is the Adblue system, injected into the exhaust gas stream to reduce NOx emissions. It won't harm the car for now, but won't pass an MOT like that and eventually it will prevent starting at all, if there is a Urea error light on the dash.

Are you sure the Adblue tank is not just needing topped up? A tankful (17L I think, never had to top mine up yet) lasts about 12,500 miles (about 21,000 Kms) so maybe it is time for a refill. The Urea light on the lower left side of the rev counter will light up when the tank level is low. Just put 5L in and see if the light goes out. You have to drive it for a few miles after topping up for the light to go off.

Out of interest, you're in the UK, yet refer to the distance on the Odometer in Kms??

It's in Spain at the moment, where I have a house. I didn't have the Urea light on originally but put 2.5 litres in to see if it cured the original warning light problem, which it didn't. I wasn't aware at the time that the tank holds about 15 lts. After Citroen changed the nox injector they said there is a problem with the reservoir tank and now I have the Urea light on and need a new tank. I'll do as you suggest and put 5 lts in it but is there not a level indication somewhere that I can check? I'm wondering why this didn't show on the dealer's computer originally. Thanks for your help.

There's nothing you personally can look at to check the level. Maybe it can be carefully dipped with a plastic pipe or a bit of garden hose to give you an idea. Not sure why they couldn't tell the level, as I'd expect it to be visible in Diagbox (Citroen software) - never scanned my new Van yet so I'll do that at some point and let you know.

The tank needing replaced is odd, unless the urea injector pump is integral and can't be replaced separately then that may explain it.

Complex vehicles, without proper OEM diagnostic tools they can be hard to diagnose exact issues.

The onboard computers know the level and that's why the urea warning light is there, but it may also illuminate for a fault, though it should be accompanied by an engine warning symbol if that were the case and not just a low level.

I've just added 5 lts of Adblue with no changes. It does seem odd that you can't practically or electronically check the level. It annoys me that my local garage could scan and say the original fault was a nox injector but Citroen couldn't find a fault then the next week said it was a faulty sensor but couldn't see a reservoir fault. Unfortunately, the pump is integral to the tank so it seems they have me over a barrel. I can't believe they couldn't see the faults on a Citroen scanner......incompetence, maybe.

Yeah a few people have been caught out with Adblue tank issues. Here's a thing...there was a recall on the cap design, as the first cap style did not allow air to enter the tank as the Adblue was being used up, causing the tank to collapse under vacuum and destroying the pump. Try hitting Citroen with that one, if it has failed due to a recall issue, they may in full or in part, foot the bill.

My van apparently has a recall but it does not say what the detail is. I have to contact a Citroen dealer. I bet it's the Adblue cap issue.

Zion, the cup with the white dot is the new ventilated cup, which one do you have?

I'm pretty sure it's the one in the first pic Buki. (Non ventilated)

Brilliant, thanks for posting that.
