I wonder - do you ever see the glow plug lights come on your dash? I was speaking to my mechanic, and he thinks they are a bit unnecessary, until you get down to -10c. Not the experience I used to have in my Skoda. Always had to wait a few seconds in the British winter for the warning light to go out.

The HDi only uses the glow plugs when the coolant temp is below 4 deg C, (pre-glow) and always after starting (post-glow), to help with warm up and emissions.

It doesn't actually need them to start, they are unnecessary on a direct injection diesel. But they help quicker (smoother) start and warm up in very cold conditions.
