Damaged threads - steering rack

Hi all,

I am refitting my hydraulic steering rack after removing it and giving it a good clean up. However, there are two pipes that join the steering rack to the hydraulic cylinder, and one of the threads in the cylinder has been a bit mangled at some stage.

I thought I'd just replace the cylinder... until I saw the price of a replacement 

Is there a good/easy/efficient way of cleaning up the threads in the cylinder and the fittings? I could run a tap into the cylinder, but I have no idea what thread they are...

Any ideas?

Cheapest option if you don't get a definitive answer here is to buy/borrow a Metric Thread Gauge set - and measure what you have, before resorting to buying a tap/die set. Alternatively, if you have one nearby, is to take the parts to a hydraulic engineer/agricultural engineer and let them do the work, which will only take a few minutes and they can probably flush out any debris too.
