Does it make any difference whether coolant is used ready-mixed or if you buy the concentrate and water separately and mix them yourself? I've previously done the latter as it's cheaper and allows easier flexibility on mix ratio, but I'm sure I remember reading a while back (not on here - somewhere on the internet) that it's preferable to buy the ready-mixed stuff, though I can't think of a logical reason why it should be. Any advice?

I always buy Prestone concentrate and mix with distilled water at 50% (IIRC). If you buy concentrate you can also change the ratio if needed.

Does not matter if you don't care about the ratio.

Coolant is so cheap I can not visualize a situation to mix your own. Other than for ratio preferences, naturally.

Thanks for the replies. I'll probably keep buying it separately, for the flexibility.

Ready mixed coolant or screenwash contains a lot of very expensive water.

A few years ago I asked a local garage which kind of anti-freeze was suitable for my M49, and the guy helpfully said that he'd give me some ready mixed free of charge. He went into the workshop for a few moments, then came out with an old green glass wine bottle with some fluid and a cork in it. I said thanks and took it home, but later, upon closer inspection, the fluid looked rather cloudy, and there seemed to be what looked like the remains of a pickled olive floating around at the bottom.........
