After a lot of struggle I’ve removed the EGR valve from my 2.0hdi, for cleaning. I cleaned a bit of carbon out of valve and can push the valve open with firm thumb pressure but not sure how to test the vacuum actuation.
Also surprised at the amount of oily gunk I had to clean out of the inlet manifold elbow.

The entire intake manifold will be like that all the way to the inlet valves, it's why EGR is such a bad idea.
To test the vacuum operation you will need a hand operated vac pump, you can get them cheap on eBay or Amazon. Not sure at what vac it should open, but that would at least show it moves under vacuum.

That's not as bad as some I've seen where the diameter goes down to the size of a pencil.
Good to give it a clean.
