Is this petrol or diesel? 2.0HDi, 1.9, 1.6HDi, 1.4? Cold or warm engine?

Apologies, I did not see it. Yeah 1,000 is too high. On a cold engine is acceptable, but not on a warm. I cannot help with the 1.9d, but probably Zion will come soon to provide proper insight.

Haynes shows idle adjustment screw and describes how to make adjustments - could be that the cold start has stuck in the 'cold' position.
750/800 would be better.

If you look back a couple of weeks on here a fella in France took off the cold start assembly as it was causing a diesel leak - although you have no leak it may point to a way to fix the issue - there are pics and a description.

Hi Gwyn, here is the position of the cold start lever shown by the red arrow, pushing in the direction of the arrow is the fast-idle position, and away is normal (warm) setting.
Check if yours is stuck on cold-start. This image is off t'internet but should be pretty much correct. Mine broke (not moving in direction of arrow) on my first ever M59 in 2003 and it was a bugger to start cold, it did start but the idle was terrible for a few mins. Needed a wee nudge of throttle for a minute until it would idle nicely, yours may be the opposite but if you have to disconnect it, it will behave like mine did. Pulling it back to drop the idle may be all you need for now, but in the cold morning it will need pushed back to the pump direction for a few mins. (till you get it fixed - try some WD40)
