Thwarted by Starter Motor Bolts on 1.6HDI

Hi all,

Attempting to help a mate replace his starter on a 2007 van. We removed the airbox, battery, battery plate and a few other bits to try and get to the upper right rear of the engine thinking we'd be able to see the two remaining bolts. We can't, and we can feel them either. We even tried sticking my head 'down the hole' to see them but to no avail. 

The allen bolt under the car we managed easily enough.

It's like half the engine has to come out!

Any advice much appreciated.

Hmm, I have a few pics but can't see a means to attach them.

Some poor quality images attached of the engine and the space at the right hand side which isn't enough to see the bolts. The only thing we didn't try was a mirror.
