[Engine] crank no start
#1
hi i am new on this site so be gentle with me,
I have a couple of 1.6hdi berlingo's  1 has just broken down dumping loads of oil everywhere. it will run but noisy and spitting oil out. (08 berlingo multispace. this will be my donor vehicle for spare parts).
the other is a 2007 berlingo multispace 1.6hdi. It was running fine until i had an accident damaging the front bumper, drivers front wing and bonnet. (the car was still running after the accident until i turned off the ignition) the car was recovered and written off by insurance being too expensive to repair. I bought the car back off insurance and have carried out some of the repairs over the last few years but the car has been stood for this time. i had the car running about 1 year ago. i now want to start using this car again.
The car cranks but would not start . if i spray easy start it will start and run until the easy start fumes run out then it just turns over. i have swapped the fuel filter from the donor car i have bled the fuel system. on checking the pressure regulating valve on the high pressure pump it did not appear to be working. i fitted the one from the donor car. bled the diesel lines again and with the aid of easy start i got the car started. it ran on the drive for about 15 / 20 mins. at first it threw out quite a bit of smoke but then ran clean. i held the revs at 2000 rpm for a short time and then at 3000 rpm for about 30 seconds. i left the car ticking over on the drive and it appeared to run and sound fine. i switched the heater on and sat inside the warm car for a bit on the cold night. I thought I had sorted it. i switched the engine off and went inside. About 40 mins later my wife came home so i started the car so she could see it running. i had to turn it over a bit longer than normal but it started and ran ok.
the next day i went back to the car and tried to start it but no joy, i dont understand why it wont start and believe some of you wonderful dedicated berlingo lovers will be able to help me fix it. i have tried both of the pressure regulating valves and both appear to be working (the pin moves when i connect a voltage to them and returns when voltage is removed)
I have read through loads of these sites and found some ideas to try but most stop without a solution. PLEASE HELP

Hi and welcome. You really need fault codes and ideally live data streams to have a chance or we're all just guessing. If you want to try something, bleed it all again and if it starts, you have air getting in somewhere in the fuel system.

I think you assume because it was bled and then ran, that it's something else. I'd bleed it again. Also maybe do a leakback test on the injectors if you can get it to run again. One may be bad. Injector 3 (counting from the clutch end) I'm sure had a sensor in it and can cause no start if faulty.

Agree with Zion, your problem sounds like a classic air ingress into the fuel system.

Does it start if you pump the priming bulb until it's firm, this isn't always guaranteed as the valves in the priming bulb can fail so it doesn't work as a one way pump.

I remember the lift sensor on one of the injectors, but was that not on the older indirect injection engine (1.9D), not sure I can recall a sensor on the common rail injectors ?

You could be right about the lift sensor JJ, it could be only on the 1.9D.

I had a niggling thought that @ThomasTheTMC had a similar issue where it would start, then not, then would then wouldn't and he ended up replacing injector 3 which cured it, if I'm remembering it right (possibly not ..old age is creeping up) and I know the older TDi like Audi all had lift sensors on one injector.

Anyway yeah does sound like air getting in eh.

As you say fault codes would be the best way but the symptoms do sound like air ingress letting the fuel drain back, the hard part is tracking down the leak   Sad

Old age is setting in after all, it was @MaksimovT and his vehicle was a DW10 with no hot start Rolleyes

hi all, thanks for the replies so far.

i have a basic code reader which states low fuel rail pressure.

1) can anyone tell me if i prime with the priming pump with the high pressure pump outlet disconnected, should i get fuel pumping out through the pump towards the rail.

2) if i pump the priming pump with the main return pipe disconnected i get a full flow of fuel out of the return pipe.

3) if i disconnect the fuel return pipe on the high pressure pump and diesel flows from it when priming does that show that fuel is getting through the pump side and not just through some kind of bypass from pump inlet to the return.

4) if i pump fuel through the system as when priming, if i disconnect a fuel pipe at an injector, should fuel come out as i pump the priming bulb

It will if you have an air lock and no fuel is getting to the pump / fuel rail

The stop solenoid would stop the fuel unless you had the ignition on.

The fuel is taking the easy path through the fuel pump, it's coming in and going straight out.

As 2), it's the same pipe you're talking about isn't it?

I would think so (Ignition on to open stop solenoid)

As mentioned, it sounds very much liked trapped air or air ingress.
