any suggestions please...2.0 hdi 90 bhp.
smell of burning oil in cabin...but only when running temp reached.
noticed its over-oiled (not had it long so not my oil change) and much pressure in rocker cover.
removed under tray and discovered so much oil on back of engine its difficult to see where its coming from.
did oil change. noticed the old oil was very thin!
question: is it possible on these engines to have fuel enter the sump and by what route?
Is the injector pump lubricated by fuel or engine oil?
Also what is the bronze coloured pipe to the rear of engine? this looks like dripping oil?
but no point fixing leaks if cause is still there.
any advice please!

Hello and welcome to the forum!
When you say the oil was 'very thin', what are you comparing it to? AFAIK the Hdi takes 5W-30 so quite 'thin' anyway.
It could have just been overfilled, now you've changed it (and I presume it's at the correct level) I would give the engine a thorough clean and and if there is a leak you should be able to see where it is.
Just a thought, the O/Hs car had an oil leak from the turbo, I had visions of ££££ but it turned out the air filter was blocked and the engine was drawing air in via the breather, might be worth a look?

If your vehicle has a diesel particulate filter (DPF), this sounds typical of a blocked DPF, which can cause diesel to get into the oil, potentially causing the oil tank to be overfilled. This can lead to catastrophic damage.
If you have DPF, it is good practice to keep the oil a bit below the maximum level, and to check it regularly. If the level goes up the diesel is effectively diluting the oil, and the oil should be drained and refilled with fresh oil.

hi There and Thank you!
had loads of these engines over the years in pugs or Citroen's and always done oil/filter but this did seem v thin.
its leaking quite a lot of oil but levels is high? i was putting 2 and 2 together re; fuel getting into oil.
need some spray degreaser to clean as cant get hand..it literally is the entire back of engine.
i can see the rocker cover gasket gone, poss around cam seal and poss turbo pipe but cant say for sure. excess oils probs pressurised crankcase and blown all seals. also a lot of oil in breather pipes...more than expected.
thanks for suggestion of Air filter, that would be an easy fix! definitely possible due to breather pipes v oily!
otherwise guess its all got to come off to see what's what.
going to take it for run now
thanks

Hi, Thanks for suggestion!

There's no Berlingo prior to 2010 which ever had a DPF, they were only legally required from then onwards. That rules out all M59 except the few Berlingo First vans made between 2010 and 2011 before they were killed off. There aren't many of those about.

Yep. All diesel vehicles regardless of engine size require them by law from 2010, and additionally require Adblue from around 2016.

Usually any smell in the car is down to antifreeze from heater matrix or diesel from injector seals. Engine oil will be thin if you did the change while the oil is warm as you should so it flows. At a reasonable temp the oil is as thin as paraffin.
So where does this bit go then ?

How much blowby have you got? Take the filler cap off and sit it on the oil filler hole - if it blows off, its too much and I would say you've buggered an oil wiper ring.
My previous engine that lasted all of one month in my brand new K9 had by far the worse blowby i've ever seen in a diesel engine - when i undid the filler cap with the engine running, i had to catch it!
