[Transmission] Stiff gear shift after lack of use.
#1
Hi

I have a 57 (jan '08) 1.6 HDi. Unfortunately due to illness I had to stop running my business and the van was left to stand for about 2 years with a very occasional drive.

Today it's still running fine, but the gear selection has become very stiff. I got a mobile mechanic out and he said cleaning out the gear selector and regreasing it should work. It didn't, and when I told him he said I'll probably need a replacement gearbox.

I don't really trust the bloke for various reasons. I'm just wondering if anyone here has any ideas? It's a big jump to go from greasing the gear selector to suddenly 'Ah, you need another gearbox'. I'm not sure if this is a common issue when you let a vehicle stand?

Heeeeleeeelp! Big Grin

Cheers

Maybe check / change the gearbox oil and go for a good run .

I would still suspect the the selector linkages, maybe a joint has been missed or maybe they have just been squirted with lubricant which may not find it's way to the problem area.

There's a few moving parts in the assembly so any one of them could cause the stiffness. The assembly may need to be stripped down and each joint cleaned & lubricated as it is reassembled.

Just my 2p worth, unless it was parked underwater I can't see a couple of years idleness causing internal issues with the gearbox...
