Does the rear carpet, which is sponge lined, tend to get really damp or do I have a leak. I lifted the carpet a while ago and the sponge was really soggy.

Not normally John, unless water is getting in. There are rubber drain bungs in the floor which could be missing or dislodged, I've had it before. But, the carpet has to come out to check.
They can be seen from underneath if dislodged inwards, but again can't be put back with the carpet in the way.
That would be my best guess if the front sponge is dry. If both are wet, it could be windscreen seal, firewall letting in somewhere (especially if no undertray is fitted) or the heater matrix leaking. Id check the spot where the steering bung is on the LHS if the passenger side is wetter than the drivers.

Gotcha.
Looks like another job then.

I have the same problem with my 2014 motability/wheelchair adapted Berlingo.
Just lifted the carpets and left a dehumidifier running to dry them out this weekend.
One side has a hole I can see the wheel arch through (due to the conversion), but I've no idea how the other side is getting wet.

Water getting inside seems to be a common problem on Berlingos - there are a few threads on here about it. My 2001 van has had a leaking heater matrix (I think) and failing door seals (definitely). I think there was a thread a few months back about a failing window seal. If not dealt with it can lead to a rotting floor, so not trivial. Unfortunately it isn't always obvious where the leak might be, and there might be more than one. A couple of simple ways that can help provide info:
*If the damp area freezes solid after a penetrating frost (we've had a few of those this winter), it's probably not the heater matrix (at least not as the main source), because of course this leaks antifreeze
*If there's a lot of fluid, mop it up with a sponge or old rag, then squeeze it out and see what colour it is - if it's coloured like antifreeze, the heater matrix is likely involved (though this doesn't rule out other leaks as well). Antifreeze also tends to have a slippery or 'slimy' feel to it
*Place dry rags on top of the sill, inside the door seals (on my old van I can 'pinch' them under the inner side of the seal), and see if any get wet after rain (preferably prolonged heavy rain). Bear in mind the seals might only let in water if the vehicle is sloped a particular way, and can be affected by parking on a kerb etc.

I am living in a very damp area by the sea and it is the rear carpet at the back end over the spare wheel area.

Ah could be the big door seal on the rear body then, or the bit where the spare wheel hook screws through.

I would guess that you have been using your rear washer in the frost, and it has burst a connection in the panel above the passenger side rear wheel. It is your washer fluid which is leaking, as there is a join in there.

That hook is gone and the hole plugged.

I never thought of that. Always having vans I've never had a rear wash lol. Good shout.
