Interior fan not working, unable to locate the relay
#1
Hi all, hope you're having a great day!

I've a left-hand-drive 2010 Berlingo Van 1.6 HDI with manual gearbox and manual AC. The four-speed interior fan died a week ago after having worked fine with no prior issues or hiccups. The car was parked for under an hour and after heading home the fan wouldn't turn on.

I've checked the fuses, all ok. Took out the glovebox and the plastic bottom piece under it in the passenger footwell. Expected to find the resistor and relay but there's only a few wires there, no sign of either of the suspect parts. Took a flashlight and looked at the driver's side. I see a green relay in the wall between the engine compartment and all that's inside the dashboard. But hoping that's for something else as it really looks like a lot of work to get there.

I intend to take out the heater motor just to wire it somehow to the battery and ensure the fault is not in the motor. Had another make and model where the entire motor had rusted and finally seized due to rain water drainage being blocked by leaves and the water finding its way inside the motor. Don't know if Berlingos suffer from the same thing though.

Anyone know where the heater resistor and relay are hidden, on a LHD Berlingo?

Edit: added photos showing the view from the passenger seat

Go for the resistor first, it is in your last image. I have circled it on your image as attached

Forgot to say, I do not know where the relay is on a LHD vehicle but on my RHD it is up at the top of the passenger footwell above and behind the passenger storage/glovebox, so if they have left it in the same place on a LHD vehicle it may well be what you are seeing that is hard to get at but hopefully someone with a LHD vehicle will be able to confirm that.

I also think that's the fan relay you are seeing. As said, Citroen only move the steering wheel and pedals, everything else is left where it is on the LHD Vs RHD to save time and money so it will be way up behind the steering wheel on your LHD vehicle.

Just like we have the fan motor up behind our steering wheel...

A tip for the resistor as correctly circled by @Multispacer, you need a 5.5mm socket to take the little bolt out, then slide the resistor towards the door to unlock it and it comes out. Fitting new is the reverse. This is most likely the issue.

Check if fan works on 4th step (max speed). If i'm correct, when resistor goes bad, first three steps will not work. Only max speed.
If need informatoin how to fix it, there's many explanatory videos at Youtube.
For example

It's a RHD car but it's the same as to LHD

Thanks for the advice - I will be getting a 5,5mm socket today since also the motor is attached with those bolts. Tried pulling the resistor yesterday but the wire connector is really tight and in a difficult location pointing downwards. Once I get that out it's time to find out how to diagnose it in case it's not obviously fried.

The fan does not work on any speed, so actually  I'm afraid that only leaves the relay - or the motor. In the worst case it could be all three - thinking what if the motor is seized, causing the resistor pack to go, and then finally the relay. Except in that case the fuses would be sized wrong, so maybe that's not possible. Will post the results once I get the stuff out!

You should try the RHD car, the fan resistor is blocked in by the throttle pedal!

Finally managed to reach the relay. It is on the left hand side, under the fuses, easy to reach once the plastic front and bottom covers are out.
Tried with a piece of wire between the terminals 30 and 87 on the relay socket, ignition off and key not in the ignition. Fan motor did not wake up but then noticed the fan control on the dash was at zero. Switched it to step 4, wired again and the fan motor went on! Switched to step three, motor did not engage.

So at least the resistor is at fault here. Possibly also the relay. But not the motor, which is the most expensive piece.

Will test the relay once I find my multimeter.

Got a new relay and a new resistor pack. Installed both, started the car. Fan did not work at any speed. Took out the relay, tried again with the piece of wire between the terminals 30 and 87 on the relay socket. Fan works, all four speeds work. Put the relay back, started the car, fan does not work at any speed.

I have not measured voltage between terminals 85 and 86 as I still don't have the multimeter. So can't verify whether the relay is getting signal.

Anyone know how the power is supposed to travel from the fan control dial onwards? Dial to relay to resistor to motor is my guess. Thinking maybe there's a wire from the dial to the relay socket 85 or 86, possibly via a fuse? I know the 30A fuse for the motor is ok, but is there another that I've missed?

There are two fuses, see blower relay fuses. Can't get the diagrams for you as not near a pc. Will update tomorrow.

Control will be from the BSI.
