Back Axle replacement in Mk-1
#1
Greetings Berlingo heads.Unfortunately my Berlingo van
has been smashed up: someone smashed in to the back of me
and has wrecked the back-axle. My question is - as I've
bought the van back from the insurers, can I replace the
back-axle with that of any Berlingo Mk-1 or must it be a
2001 DW8 1.9 Diesel Mk-1, and is it an easy enough job?
I'd be grateful for any advice. Cheers, 'split rivit'.

cheers steve, any idea where i could find out for sure, theres plenty on e bay, which i think are from scrappys and when io ask them there not sure either, ive had a flick around the forum but can only find info on torsion bars?

Have a look on the citroen service box linked on the forum, there as best as I can tell only very minor differences- but not anything to make thm not fit I dont think- only the abs sensors look to be different on some but if you transfer yours accross it should be fine. So long as yours has drums and the one your fitting has drums it shuldnt be a problem- the only other differences are the thickness of the torsion bars, depending on a 600 or an 800 van.

Im going to be swapping a 405 MI-16 axle onto mine in a few weeks time when time allows (its sat in the garden waiting.....) I can let you know how faffy it is then!

If your struggling, and not in a mssive rush my rear beam will be available in the next few weeks, and its known to be in good order. Only problem is I dont know when im going to get the chance to swap them over as my work is super busy at the moment.

well i finally sorted a decent axle, £100 complete, im in the process of fitting it, the thing comes off real easy, unfortunately nearly all the brake nuts were seized so new brake lines had to be made up, dont try flaring, original steel pipe, it wont work, you need a special kit and they are well expensive, so resorting to copper pipe new lines were made up,another thing to mention is the aluminium brake connector block, if you cant screw the union nut in with your fingers dont go in with a spanner as i did they are well fragile and you will strip the thread, luckily i had two to play with and that thing looks quite expensive. when ive finished ill let yer know if it works.

yeah it all works fine, however the two rubber block susspension mounts had torn away from there mounts so i just glued them back in,considering the whole weight of the vehicle is on top of them i cant see a problem and it drives the same as before,if any one knows if this is going to cause major probs let me know cheers.
